1837 please pardon my CART ignorance. why did vassar have to pit at lap 36? the pit window was 20 laps and he pitted on lap 20 to be in good shape when they called the race after 36  he should have been able to go to lap 40, which means the race would have ended before his required pit. maybe there is something i am missing here.

in any event, it was a ludicrous decision to not stop at 36, christ da matta had just spun out 2 laps earlier under caution. they should have gotten everyone off as asap as they knew they couldn't complete and it would end under caution.

I totally agree with you Sandwedge but he had pit on lap 17 so his max was Lap 37. He had no choice but to pit with Nakano and anothe rone i think and that kill our last match ups. Race should have been over on lap 36 but officials screw us big time... :(

i think vasser didn't pit until 20 , i was looking at the race commentary last night as they were "racing". at lap 19 he was asking his crew " hey guys don't i have to pit here? we are coming up on 20 laps" and they told him no, no stay out until 20.

the reason vassar and that group pitted is they announced the race was going to be 41 laps, conditions permitting. so everyone who had to pit by 40 immediately pitted as they could not go 41. however, conditions did not permit as it was dark so they ended on 40 instead of 41. they had nothing to gain by pitting on 37 instead of waiting until 40

CART must be jealous of F1 racing's ability to piss off their fans by the shenanigans they pull and were trying to piss their fans off too.

I just saw a replay - total b.s. My hunch is that they saw Andretti in 1st (who is taking his team and himself to IRL next year) and Fittipaldi in 2nd (who is darting to Nascar) and CART figured - F.U. We'll screw around with you so a "CART" person from next year wins it. Maybe a bit of payback against IRL for screwing Tracy out of the win in the Indy 500 too.

Anyways next race is in California. These 500 mile races on large ovals are a total toss up. Tracy really won the Indy 500 and does well on large ovals so should be tough. Andretti of course can never be counted out on large ovals and is the most talented. But to me the 2 drivers that are the ones I will bet on are Junqueira and Franchitti.

Junqueira won in Japan in a race he totally dominated and was 5th in England in a race he could have won with some racing luck.

Franchitti won in England and was 3rd in Japan. Only problem is that prior to this year he sucked on ovals.

Carpentier is also a driver with a decent chance.

This may come down to the engine thing again. Tracy dominated early in both England and Japan but the Honda engine just wasn't strong enough to go 500 miles. Mind you Franchitti had the same engine in England and won the race so who knows.

Should be an interesting race will be looking for about 6/1 on Junqueira and 8/1 on Franchitti. We'll see if I get it.

What do yo like 1837?
