Indiana University will announce today that Bill Lynch has signed a contract to serve as the IU football coach through the end of the 2011 season.

The announcement will be made official in a noon press conference. The terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed but the deal will officially run through July 1, 2012.
Lynch led IU to a 7-5 record, which is expected to be capped by its first bowl appearance since the 1993 season. The seven victories were two more than Indiana had won in any season since 1994.
Lynch, 53, had been hired in June to fill in for late IU coach Terry Hoeppner for the 2007 season. Hoeppner died June 19 from the complications of brain cancer.

I for one am happy that they have decided to keep Coach Lynch on at IU. I went to high school with the Hoosiers' offensive co-ordinator Matt Canada and he has nothing but great things to say about Lynch.

Several IU fans I know didn't want him to get the job mainly because he couldn't win at Ball State. In my opinion he did as good a job as expected at BSU considering the state of the athletic department at the time. These same fans want a big name hire. It's not gonna happen... and if it did, that person would only stay in Bloomington until a better gig came along, or was fired.

The bottom line on Lynch, as it was with Coach Hep, is that he WANTS to be at IU. He's an Indiana native that will not look to use IU as a stepping stone. He wants to build the Hoosiers into a contender in Bloomington. This is THE job for him.

Best of luck to the Hoosiers and Coach Lynch.

I agree. Despite this year's success, what "big name" can we really get?

We got our coach in Hep, but tragically fate intervened......let Lynch keep the ship going. We have a young team. Let them build on the bowl season this year with some stability. If we continue to make progress, then the next time we need to make a hire, we can attract a so-called "big name."

And, wanting to be at IU is the key......Lynch is a good fit and a good ambassador for the school......its great to see the masses finally excited about IU football.....when I was there at school we went to a bowl game every year, the stadium was sold out and people were excited.....sure, it was just an appetizer for basketball, but people were legitmately interested in the program and expected to win and play in bowl......good to see that mindset creeping back into prominence.
