HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 12:30 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 2-year-olds

Indian Firewater - Sharp winner appears very ready for his next condition; does not need the lead to succeed.

Privilaged - John Sadler doesn't win with many FTS; he could improve and win again, dangerous foe in cold quinella.

Long Shot - Color of Courage

Race 2 - 1 mile (turf) Purse $57,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Andina - Good Euro debut when third among 15 starters at Newbury; plenty of prep work for Ben Cecil for U.S. debut.

Bonnie Blue Flag - FTS from the Bob Baffert barn; bred to be any kind, figures to be way overbet with Garrett Gomez.

Long Shot - Dixie's Sandal

Race 3 - 7 furlongs, Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up

New Bay - Richard Mandella starts from square one after La Jolla loss; elongated sprint distance is perfect for him.

Noblety - Only horse in the field running for a price tag; hard knocker has the most career wins of any in the field.

Long Shot - Plasma Beam

Race 4 - 1 1/4 miles (turf), $300,000 Yellow Ribbon, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Lemonette - Midwest shipper need not be much to compete in SoCal; like that main man Rafael Bejarano takes the call.

Magical Fantasy - Best of a weak west coast distaff turf division; she is strictly the one to beat at short odds.

Long Shot - Black Mamba

Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $55,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Excellent News - Lost to the talented half-sister to Georgie Boy in last; can stalk from a parking lot post.

Evening Jewel - Was well bet in debut at Del Mar and ran OK; been given time and could dramatically improve tonight.

Long Shot - Carrie Rose

Race 6 - 1 mile (turf), $150,000 Oak Tree Mile, 3-year-olds and up

Whatsthescript - Should see a spirited pace duel between Monterey Jazz and Cowboy Cal; easiest test in quite some time.

Cowboy Cal - He shipped to SoCal before and knocked it out of the park; runs better when not the favorite.

Long Shot - Allicansayis Wow

Race 7 - 1 1/8th miles, $350,000 Goodwood, 3-year-olds and up

Colonel John - Trouble trip in the Pacific Classic cost him all chance; it's about time he put it all together.

Richard's Kid - Upset winner of the Pacific Classic; when Bob Baffert gets them good, they stay good for a while.

Long Shot - Mine That Bird

Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Lady's Secret, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Zenyatta - She may be vulnerable, but not today; worry about her when she faces Careless Jewel and Icon Project.

Cocoa Beach - Remember when she placed to Zenyatta in the 2008 Ladies Classic; important to prep over synthetics.

Long Shot - Lethal Heat

Race 9 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $59,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up

War Native - Got a test drive in his U.S. debut; expect Neil Drysdale to turn up the screws for today.

Fu Peg He Rat - Big rider switch to Garrett Gomez signals intent; decent sort has clearly underachieved.

Long Shot - Sterkel

Race 10 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $55,000, 2-year-olds

Mr. Charlie - OK debut, Bob Baffert used him as a rabbit for stablemate Indian Firewater; his turn to shine tonight.

Get My Fix - Lost to the talented Dave in Dixie last time; his race two back is definitely fast enough to win.

Long Shot - The Skinny Man

Best Bet - Zenyatta (race 8)

Santa Anita Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/2/$20.60; Long Shots, 8/3/$41.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$6.20

Santa Anita Totals - 131/27/$186.80; Long Shot, 66/12/$142.20; Best Bets, 8/5/$24.20

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #2 Double Domino (5/2) in race 10 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Grassy Nellie ran out at Keeneland. Stats - 146/109/$822.40

Disastrous day at Belmont Park, as two horses had to be put down after suffering catastrophic leg injuries in consecutive grass races.
In the third, an overnight stakes at a mile-and-quarter over the "firm" inner course, Exotic Indy, 4-year-old A.P. Indy filly that ran sixth in the Ruffian last out and won a stakes at Monmouth two races prior, shattered her left hind cannon bone down the backside, then was grim sight as she ran around the course on three legs to the stretch, where she was euthanized immediately.
In the fourth, a $50G maiden claimer for 2-year-olds at a mile-and-sixteenth over the Widener, Tony Manero, colt by Stormin Fever, was trailing the field midway of the far turn when he suffered a compound lateral condylar fracture of the right front. He also was euthanized on the track.

Neither jockey, Justin Shepherd and Jose Lezcano, respectively, was injured.
"[The turf] is a little loose," said John Velazquez, whose mount Bubbly Jane, the 4-5 favorite in the third, took a bad stumble in the stretch before getting up late to win. "It's not bad, but they need to work on it before it gets worse."
FIRST RACE: In day's opener on grass, 2-1 favorite Broad River gunned to front and shook loose on lead under Alan Garcia. Then Blues Street, 4-1 for Pletcher-Velazquez, launched his bid on the far turn, with Expansion and Nergal circling horses with their rallies. Broad River and Blues Street dueled down the stretch, with Broad River kicking clear again late. Expansion was best of rest.
SIXTH RACE: Despite earlier breakdowns, they left this race on turf after the course was inspected, and everyone made it around safely. Bullara and Counting House dueled down the backside and around the turn, when 4-5 favorite Bestowed, after tucking inside behind the leaders, swung out to split them under Jose Lezcano turning for home. Bestowed had the lead top of stretch, but 4-1 Cliff Meadows, Sebastian Morales up, blew right by him in mid-stretch.

Winning numbers: 9-5-6-2-1-2
Winners (6 of 6) paid $5,084
Consolation (5 of 6) paid $126.50

BEST BET: Only a Vision (3rd race)

First Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Keeping the Honor 2. Stroll for Acure 3. Bold Vindication

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KEEPING THE HONOR returned from a layoff and was in traffic leaving the eighth pole in first start for Dutrow; met three eventual graded stakes winners on this circuit last year. STROLL FOR ACURE cuts back to a mile, distance of nose loss in first restricted claimer; middle move into slow pace first out at the meet. BOLD VINDICATION has been freshened since giving way in 10th start of the year; will be pressed early by SAN NAA and FOREST KING.

Second Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Fayoum 2. El Primero 3. City Wolf

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FAYOUM dueled to the stretch in both starts at Saratoga, beginning with debut when he ran a 4-5 shot into the ground; training sharply, appears loose on the lead unless one of the first-time starters has early speed. EL PRIMERO raced wide and finished evenly in the slop first time out, beaten only three lengths for second behind a runaway winner; two good 5f works recently. CITY WOLF is a half to Horse of the Year Ghostzapper and multiple stakes winner City Zip.

Third Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Only a Vision 2. Crazy Thing 3. Not Now

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ONLY A VISION has had a solid campaign winning four of eight starts, and returned from a freshening with a rail-skimming rally to draw clear; right back. CRAZY THING has been freshened since breaking slowly at the Spa first time off the claim; in the money all three starts at Belmont's spring meet, including a win for this price. NOT NOW is the field's only 7f winner - a maiden score off a January-to-July layoff on this track; also won fresh at Philly Park in May.

Fourth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Courageous Cat 2. Take the Points 3. Grassy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COURAGEOUS CAT has won all three turf starts as a 3-year-old, each time in tougher company while stretching out and improving his figures; third and fourth horses behind him in the Hall Of Fame returned to win graded stakes. TAKE THE POINTS was outfinished by STRAIGHT STORY in two meetings at Colonial Downs, but improved to take the Secretariat with a perfect stalking trip; training well for leading barn. GRASSY stumbled at the break, came widest into the lane and sustained a long run to win that wild six-horse photo at Saratoga; lightly raced colt may be this good.

Fifth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Senegal 2. Military Star 3. Structural Change

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SENEGAL has had nearly seven weeks off since even try for third on soft turf vs. a repeat winner; best figure came off similar spacing between starts. MILITARY STAR was rank and steadied on the first turn and faded at even money second out; turnback from 1 1/8 miles and removal of blinkers (trainer 43% with that equipment change) seem like the right moves. STRUCTURAL CHANGE has run into a succession of blowout winners sprinting on dirt; becomes the one to beat in the event of a switch to the main track.

Sixth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Fly Dorcego 2. Mr. Bourbon Street 3. Raceland

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FLY DORCEGO was running in Grade 2 stakes last year, drops for the fourth straight start and makes first start on conventional dirt in the U.S.; in the money all six wet-track races in his native Brazil. MR. BOURBON STREET couldn't keep pace through a blistering half-mile at Saratoga, but ran well last out to edge U. S. CAVALRY for second; both fit well at this level. RACELAND recorded his best Beyer since April '08 when involved in the pace throughout $7,500 placing; need only run that race back to wire these.

Seventh Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. To Tell the Truth 2. Find the Wire 3. D' Wildcard

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the first leg of the $350k late pick four switches to dirt, TO TELL THE TRUTH has been no worse than second in four starts this year on fast, good and sloppy tracks from 7fs to 1 1/16 miles; working well for new trainer, goes well fresh. On turf, FIND THE WIRE had a tough setup last out racing wide off a slow pace set by front-running Urban Flight; very consistent figures prior to that, may want it firm. D' WILDCARD swung wide and put in a good late run to get up through last three-eighths in 35.37 seconds vs. N2L types; trainer 38% with last-out winners.

Eighth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Awesome Maria 2. Nonna Mia 3. Touching Beauty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AWESOME MARIA was a much-the-best Matron winner over TOUCHING BEAUTY and WORSHIP THE MOON; been 7fs twice now, and the new faces she meets in Frizette are all stretching out from 5 1/2 or 6fs. NONNA MIA sped clear from the break and drew away to a rapid maiden win second out; Empire Maker filly has license to get this trip, but has to stretch out 5 1/6ths of a mile facing better-quality pace pressure. Touching Beauty improved 18 Beyer points for Matron placing second out, and followed with improved workout; heading in the right direction. DEVIL MAY CARE rushed up after slow break, drew off to win debut as the favorite; barn had 11 juvenile wins at the meet through Thursday.

Ninth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Dublin 2. Aspire 3. Discreetly Mine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DUBLIN stumbled at the break, raced wide moving into a sharp pace and drew clear despite drifting as Hopeful favorite; lone two-time winner in Champagne. ASPIRE was a game debut winner (seven lengths back to third horse), and split horses with a good rally from 10th to get second in Hopeful; trio of local works capped by bullet 5fs, set to go forward off Beyer pair-up. DISCREETLY MINE comes off three straight rail draws, the latest a tough-trip placing in Futurity behind 2-5 D'Funnybone; figures close off maiden win.

Tenth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Inherit the Gold 2. Double Domino 3. Quiet On the Tee

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the nightcap is switched to dirt, INHERIT THE GOLD was away from April to August and quickly got back to his best figures on sloppy and fast tracks; would rate edge over TEMORE. On turf, DOUBLE DOMINO set the pace and was nipped final stride first time over the course; beaten favorite doesn't face much other early speed. QUIET ON THE TEE has run virtually the same figures in four turf starts since maiden win over STORM HOPE (another who puts up figures in mid 70s every time); cuts back from 1 3/8 miles.
