HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Sweet Thoughts - She was favored in debut back in January; John Shirreffs returns her on closing day, interesting.

Cherryblossommiss - 5 seconds in a row is enough for me; good for the place pick all, but not in the daily double.

Long Shot - Broken Silence

Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up

Tiz Bodacious - Third start off a 7-month hiatus; John Sadler takes the blinkers up, waves the white flag of surrender.

Trip to the Ranch - Another Christmas in summer horse, this one from Jeff Mullins; need not be much to earn a paycheck.

Long Shot - Don't Forget Muq

Race 3 - 6 furlongs, $85,000 The Pirate's Bounty, 3-year-olds and up

Dancing in Silks - Has a big edge over the favorite, recent action; this is a pretty nice sprinter in his own right.

Cost of Freedom - The most talented horse in the race; he's been away a year, this race isn't the target for him.

Long Shot - Candy Pull

Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

Zohan - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; dead fit from two turf routes.

Great Raid - Ground saving trip can only help in a bulky field; Victor Espinoza sits the pocket until the stretch run.

Long Shot - Tom Bombadil

Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $70,000, Optional claiming $100,000, 3-year-olds and up

Racketeer - Big run in the Brubaker will set him up for this; no turf wins will only inflate his odds further.

Times Gone By - Second start off a 9-month hiatus; has a ton of ability, but lacks the experience of others.

Long Shot - Victory Pete

Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

I Swear - Rough, wide trip hurt her chances; give Joel Rosario another chance, no one is riding better than him.

Bubbley Blonde - Lone speed is the most dangerous bet in racing; big rider switch to Garrett Gomez, just go baby go.

Long Shot - Morgan Lane

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $62,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up

M One Rifle - This is one fast baby; they haven't tried to rate him, so expect Mike Smith to be the speed of the speed.

Bonfante - If the early pace is overly hot, he could be winging it late; figures to be a big overlaid price.

Long Shot - Supreme Summit

Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), $200,000 Palomar Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Carribean Sunset - The best rider in the U.S., Ramon Dominguez, comes to Del Mar; he'll carve out a trip from post 10.

Allicansayis Wow - Patrick Biancone wheels her back on short rest; key for me is Garrett Gomez takes the call.

Long Shot - Wild Promises

Race 9 - 1 mile, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up

Self Insured - John Sadler has dropped some horses right thru the floor; could win by a pole or not make the trip.

Skippy Due - Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; draw a line thru his last race and his resume fits right in.

Long Shot - A Cat Named Snipe

Race 10 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $27,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

Andwhatelse - Showed a fondness for Del Mar synthetics in last; Alex Solis figures to sit a trip and fly down the lane.

Axel Foley - Many barns are culling their stock before heading north; had a fun Del Mar meet, see you at Oak Tree.

Long Shot - Just Heat

Best Bet - Racketeer (race 5)

Del Mar Monday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/5/$32.60; Long Shots, 10/1/$8.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.00

Del Mar Totals - 623/149/$1,036.00; Long Shots, 323/32/$467.80; Best Bets, 34/15/$57.00

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #10 Dynamont (7/2) in race 8 at Philadelphia Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Hatheer won at Saratoga paying $3.40 to win, $2.50 to place and $2.20 to show. Stats - 138/105/$782.20

Horse Racing HANK WESCH
Del Mar meet not great, just good, as usual
By Hank Wesch
Union-Tribune Staff Writer
2:00 a.m. September 9, 2009
DEL MAR ? Final thoughts on the 70th summer racing season here on its closing day.
It seems like ?good? is the highest adjective to which any meeting here can aspire these days. And given that parameter, 2009 can be placed in that category with most of the years that preceded it.
Not ?great,? because inevitably there will be, as there were, breakdowns and equine fatalities. Events that, especially in the past four years, are chronicled, analyzed, agonized over, commented on and it seems obsessed about more here than anywhere else.
For those of you scoring at home (bless those who aren't, but it sure seems like a lot of you are), the fatality total through Monday is 13, of which 12 were on the synthetic Polytrack surface and one on turf. The total for 2008 was eight, all on the main track, and for 2007, the first year of Polytrack, 11, with six on the main track and five on the turf. In 2006, the last year of dirt, 18 horses were euthanized, 14 from injuries on the main track and four on the turf.
Much has been written and said about the breakdowns, the surface and the possible whys and wherefores. Here's one comment that previously fell through the journalistic cracks that I feel may be relevant.
Trainer Dave Hofmans in an interview at Hollywood Park in mid-July:
?The thing about synthetic surfaces is you can train on them or you can race on them, but you can't do both.?
Hofmans said that for Hollywood Park and Santa Anita, the Pro-Ride and Cushion Track surfaces are generally fine when live racing is going on across town and through the initial period after a race meeting starts. But when the surface is taking a major pounding, morning and afternoon, it can get pulverized beyond what was ever anticipated when the switch to synthetics was being considered.
Del Mar's track gets heavy morning and afternoon use from the day it opens in mid-July to the day it closes in early September. And maintaining the surface to adjust to the range of temperature and moisture on the coastline has been trickier than anyone ever anticipated.
In the dirt days, Del Mar's lack of a separate training track suitable for taking some of the pressure off the main one was often cited as a major problem. A problem that Polytrack was said to have great potential to resolve. But a problem, it appears, that hasn't gone away.
A Del Mar meeting can't be ?great? from the racing standpoint, of course, because it's in California, a besieged-by-problems, island unto itself when it comes to the Sport of Kings. The place may be beautiful, the everyday purse structure higher than most with stakes purses totaling more than $7 million, but c'mon, who'd want to race there?
So instead of Rachel Alexandra, fans had to settle for Zenyatta, increasing her record to 12-0 with a heart-stopping stretch run to win by a head in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes.
Instead of the ?Midsummer Derby? Travers with Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird splashing to victory, fans had to settle for a 3-year-old named Zensational winning the Bing Crosby and Pat O'Brien Stakes, establishing himself as the favorite for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Santa Anita and getting this writer's vote for Horse of the Meeting.
And, of course, a Del Mar meeting can't be ?great? because the crowd totals on the biggest days are artificially enhanced by concerts and/or overall clever marketing ploys.
True, racing purists. But where Pacific Classic Day drew a concert-boosted 42,549 on-track, Hollywood Gold Cup Day at Hollywood Park had 8,064 on-track.
What's so great about that?

Numerology at Sunset
2:00 a.m. September 9, 2009
Due to the general state of the economy and the plight of the newspaper industry, staff writer Hank Wesch is required to take a 10 percent cut in the starting imaginary stake (from $2,000 to $1,800) and an imaginary furlough day each week (Mondays) for the fantasy betting gig during the Del Mar racing season. His daily workload, one selection by semi-serious handicapping and another by total hunch, remains unchanged. Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
Handicap: Carribean Sunset (8th, $20W) looks like one monster ship-in from New York for trainer Christophe Clement for the Palomar Handicap and sending jockey Ramon Dominguez may indicate how serious they are. Plus a $3 tri key with Carribean Sunset to win over Wild Promises, Gotta Have Her and Missit.
Hunch: The date: 9/9/09. The play: $20W bets on all the No. 9 horses: Zohan (4th), Prussian (5th), I Swear (6th), Missit (8th), Self Insured (9th) and Axel Foley (10th).
Monday's handicap: Lookin At Lucky (8th, $50W) came through as expected, winning by a length as the even-money favorite to provide a $50 profit. The $5 tri key with Lookin At Lucky to win over Champagne d'Oro, Smiling Tiger and Hurricane Ike was lost, however, due to underestimation of Make Music for Me, the runner-up.
Monday's hunch: All Money No Love (9th, $20W) ran well at 9-1 odds but finished fifth, meaning we broke even for the day. Our motto: We always hope to break even, because we can use the money.
Monday's result: $0.   Bankroll: $1,588.30.

Jeff Siegel's analysis for Wednesday, Sept. 9

Jeff Siegel's analysis for Wednesday, Sept. 9

Jeff Siegel's analysis for Wednesday, Sept. 9
2:00 a.m. September 9, 2009
 FIRST RACE
CHERRYBLOSSOMMISS is overdue for a win and should be a short price to graduate. The Sadler-trained filly was beaten as the choice in her last pair but deserves one more chanced.
BROKEN SILENCE stretches out for the first time, is bred to enjoy the added ground, and may hold all others.
PINK DIAMOND launches a comeback, sports a series of good drills, and should be part of the pace throughout.
Long shot: Sweet Thoughts.
 SECOND RACE
TIZ BODACIOUSremoves blinkers, drops for the money run, and has back numbers than can beat this field.
DON'T FORGET MUQ ran well at this level two races back and should improve with the return to the main track.
HOLD THIS broke his maiden from off the pace and could be a late factor again today.
Long shot: Trip to the Ranch.
 THIRD RACE
COST OF FREEDOM has worked like he's fit and ready for his first start in almost a year and completely out classes this field.
DANCING IN SILKS scored gamely over this track in his comeback and should complete the exacta.
TANGLED TANGO needed his comeback try and helped make the race go for stable mate `Freedom.
Long shot: Polonius.
 FOURTH RACE
GET RAID switches to Espinoza, catches a below par field for the level and has numbers that are good enough to win.
LITTLE HEATER switches to Mullins after a dull comeback try and seems sure to improve a ton for his new trainer.
ZOHAN, a route to sprint play, drops into a claimer for the first time, switches to Rosario and adds blinkers. He's a contender by default.
Long shot: Markus D.
 FIFTH RACE
BECRUX didn't get the best of runs when wide and outrun in the Del Mar Mile `Cap but is wheeled back quickly and could produce the last run over a course he's always liked.
VICTORY PETE, freshened and realistically spotted, should be prominent throughout and has a big look off his nice score two races back.
GET FUNKY is still trying to find his former form, but gets a slightly easier spot today and can improve enough to be a factor.
Long shot: El Gato Malo.
 SIXTH RACE
I SWEAR is better than his last shows and seems capable of tagging the speed with a repeat of his good runner-up effort two runs back. Rosario stays aboard for Sadler.
BUBBLEY BLONDE has dangerous early speed and could be tough to catch if he can slow down and relax early.
JOINT AGREEMENT was nosed out in a similar spot last month and should be in the battle once again.
Long shot: Living Our Dream.
 SEVENTH RACE
M ONE RIFLE bids for his third straight win and with a recent bullet workout the Headley-trained gelding seems to have room for further improvement.
HALO NAJIB, freshened and exiting a series of graded stakes, has a moderate work tab to his credit but will be tough if cranked up.
ITALIAN RULES is back sprinting on the main track and rates a look off his good try two runs back.
Long shot: Maui Mark.
 EIGHTH RACE
CARRIBEAN SUNSET missed by a head in the Diana Handicap behind champion Forever Together at Saratoga last month and if she brings that type of effort to Del Mar she can win this event despite the outside draw.
GOTTTA HAVE HER always gives her best and ran a winning race when second in the recent John C. Mabee Stakes.
LETHAL HEAT is back with fillies and mares today and should be on or near the lead throughout.
Long shot: Missit.
 NINTH RACE
SKIPPY DUE drops to his lowest level ever, switches to Quinonez and should be able to produce the last run.
YODELAN DAN looked good beating a softer field with a big figure and is dangerous right back for Mullins despite the two level class hike.
SELF INSURED switches to Rosario while taking a considerable class drop and figures to be very dangerous in this league. Long shot: Flirting For Love.
 10TH RACE
ANDWHATELSE is lightly raced, capable of further improvement, and doesn't have much to beat in this bottom rung maiden claimer. A repeat of his last race would be good enough.
COLLALTO is up a notch following a sharp runner up try over the track and should be in the battle once again.
SOVEREIGN LORD just missed in a strong affair 23-1 last time out and figures tough if he can turn in two alike.
Long shot: Royal Vision.
Best bet: M One Rifle (7th)
