HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Chicago Gal - Nearly pulled a big upset in debut facing males; a repeat effort versus her own sex will win this.

Space Age Lovesong - Has cashed paychecks in 5-of-7 starts, an admirable rate; saves ground and grinds late.

Long Shot - Be Driven

Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds

Peacock Alliance - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; his race two back wins this.

Big Bad Boo - Beaten favorite gets a key rider switch to Chantal Sutherland; Barry Abrams puts her on live ones.

Long Shot - Southern Defender

Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $49,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Mother Ruth - Been heavily favored in 5-of-6 career starts; has underachieved, but still has a high ceiling.

Dotsy Jean - She has become a tigress since claimed by Marty Jones; she is equally adept on both sod and synthetics.

Long Shot - Gambler's Justice

Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up

Top Feeling - Like the turn back in distance and parking lot post; been away a year, but showed some ability.

Hot Damon - Lost Rafael Bejarano to the outside horse, but Garrett Gomez is a good sub; sits and makes one run.

Long Shot - Dohnster

Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up

Wells Furgo - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; exits a key race too.

Steel Blue - Eastern invader also has never run for a price tag; been away 7-months, but need not be much horse.

Long Shot - Tale the Truth

Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $22,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 4-year-olds and up

Tom Bombadil - Only horse to run down the hill before and it was an excellent second; like the wide post too.

Alpine Nugget - Tepid morning line chalk has been away 14-months; has certainly run fast enough to beat these.

Long Shot - Wolfgang

Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Underground - Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry, expect one to win; she may be a filly who prefers synthetics.

Pursuit of Glory - Like the turn back in distance from route to sprint; lone win came over Dundalk Polytrack.

Long Shot - Via Veneto

Race 8 - 1 mile, Purse $14,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

I Swear - Claimed by Eric Kruljac who then hires Rafael Bejarano to ride; loves synthetics, maybe not the distance.

Wilma Rules - Strange to see Garrett Gomez riding in a cheap race like this; must have a big shot or else.

Long Shot - Ellie L.

Best Bet - Chicago Gal (race 1)

Santa Anita Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$26.40; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals - 147/38/$248.40; Long Shots, 75/8/$81.00; Best Bets, 9/5/$19.40

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #5 Matai (5/2) in race 5 at Tampa Bay. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Wednesday, Christmas Parade ran third at Tampa Bay paying $2.40 to show. Stats - 9/7/$38.60

January 6, 2010

We turned another profit with my top picks, meaning we have turned a profit each racing day so far this year.

Okay, it has only been three days, but Cal Ripken and Joe DiMaggio had to start somewhere.

Actually, I was not very happy how yesterday turned out, and my personal bankroll ended up in the red for the day.

I only had one winner on top in the nine races, Dana?s Bell pulling off the upset in the fifth race, returning $23.40 for the victory.

I had a few too many seconds and thirds, and we were not knocking down the exactas and trifectas.

The Eclipse Award finalists were announced yesterday by the NTRA. The hardware will be handed out on Jan. 18 at the 39th Annual Eclipse Awards Dinner. The event will be held at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills.

I will be watching the festivities in my pajamas from Florida.

There are usually three nominations for Horse of the Year, but only Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra garnered votes this year.

Here are the finalists with my selections notated in bold:

Here is today's opening race from Aqueduct to get our day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Clm $25,000N2L (12:30 ET)
#6 Big Grey 3/1
#9 Turaath 8/5
#8 Cardiologist 10/1
#3 Extinguish 5/1

Analysis: #6 Big Grey drops in for a tag for the first time here in his second start off an eight-month layoff. The Brown barn is showing a 3 for 8 mark (with a +ROI) with horses making their second start off a +180 day layoff. The gelding returned off the bench facing state bred Alw-1 foes, stalking the early pace and coming up empty in the stretch in a sixth place finish. The runner up in the race was Golden Boychick, who returned to beat state bred Alw-1 company in his next outing on Jan. 2. He ran big two back breaking his maiden on the inner despite a tardy start, earning a fig that would be good enough to be in the mix in this spot.

#9 Turaath crossed the wire first at this level two back but was DQ'd for coming out and brushing a foe midstretch. Last out in his first start off the claim by the Jacobson barn the five year old checked in third off a two-month break. That has turned out to be a highly graded race, the fifth and sixth place finishers next out winners, while the winner and runner up both came back to run second in their next starts. He looks like a legit threat here as the likely short priced favorite.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 2/1 or better.
EX: 6,9 / 3,6,8,9
TRI: 6,9 / 3,6,8,9 / 3,4,6,8,9

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 8 Alw $42,000N1X (3:49 ET)
#3 Montecore 8/5
#4 Jess Not Jesse 3/1
#5 Ramblingamblinman 7/2
#2 Cannon / #2b Gridiron 8/1

Analysis: #3 Montecore stumbled coming out of the gate last out, came up the inside in the stretch and came up short when angled out in midstretch in a fourth place finish. He caught an inner track that was playing to horses on or close to the lead that day. Two back off a six-month layoff the colt was a game neck winner versus NY bred Alw-2 optional claimers. The colt looks primed for a good effort here in his third start of his current form cycle and just needs a heads up ride from Cohen, who is having a solid meeting, but does not seem to be doing much for our bankroll.

#4 Jess Not Jesse is making his first start since making a good late run to finish second in last year's Count Fleet behind the talented Haynesfield. The colt has popped three consecutive bullet drills for the Rice barn that is 28% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff. He looks tight and ready to fire off the bench.

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Aqueduct
R1: #8 Cardologist 10/1
R4: #9 Shopit 20/1
R4: #3 Dakota Doll 8/1
R5: #4 Wicked Queen 15/1
R6: #8 Cherokee Trick 10/1
R7: #9 City Spirit 10/1
R8: #2 Cannon / #2b Gridiron 8/1

Good luck today!

Thoroughbred racing industry released final figures for 2009, showing handle in U.S. fell 9.88 percent (from $13.7 billion in 2008 to $12.3 billion last year) while purses were down 5.59 percent (from $1.16 billion to $1.09 billion).

* Track was fast, with wind blowing against horses down backside. Four favorites won, all ridden by Ramon Dominguez; Rich Migliore booted home a pair of 5-1 shots.

FIRST RACE: Fuzzy Britches gave chalk-players reason to sweat, spinning her wheels in traffic much of the way under Dominguez, until she finally swung out in the clear mid-stretch and found her best stride, rallying to take command and draw clear.

SECOND RACE: Amazing what a class drop can do. One Brave Cat, beaten 26 lengths vs. special weights at Philly Park last out, and never better than sixth in seven starts, dropped in for a 16G maiden claiming tag, his lowest level ever, went right to the front under Orlando Bocachica, opened daylight, shook off bids from 3-1 Mischiefonmymind and 6-5 favorite Shamroge to scoot clear again top of stretch, and was never threatened to the wire at 16-1.

FOURTH RACE: Pretty Cozzy, second in her first two starts for Bruce Brown at 2-1 and 2-5, was 1-5 with Dominguez riding again. This time the issue was never really in doubt as Pretty Cozzy tracked the early pace set by 11-1 Gatto Nero, moved to take the lead in mid-stretch and drew clear, much to the relief of bridge-jumpers who bet $93,990 to show on her out of a total pool of $113,959.

Winning numbers: 7-6-4-2-5-8

24 winners each receives $5,143

Jeff Siegel's Analysis for Thursday, Jan. 7, 2009

Jeff Siegel's Analysis for Thursday, Jan. 7, 2009

Jeff Siegel's Analysis for Thursday, Jan. 7, 2009

Yesterday?s program illustrated how a track bias can influence the outcome of a race. The track was noticeably favoring the outside lanes and the closers, so when analyzing form from yesterday you should remember to forgive the fading front-runners and downgrade the rally-widers. How will the track play today? Who knows? This is why you should to go to school during the first couple of races to see if the bias remains intact.

There doesn?t seem to be much value in the first two events. In the opener #4 Chicago Gal is listed as the 4/5 choice following a promising runner-up try vs. colts in her debut last month. She?s matched with fillies and mares today and with any kind of improvement she?ll be hard to beat. But there?s no percentage playing or keying an odds-on morning line choice. Let's sit it out.

In the second race, #1 Peacock Alliance returns to the maiden claiming ranks and a repeat of his race before last most likely will land him in the winner?s circle. However, the rail post causes much concern and until we?ve developed a feel on how the track is playing, this type of selection (8/5 on the morning line) looks pretty shaky. We?ll pass this race as well.

The Pick-6 begins in the third race and we?ll double the affair using #4 Sleep Tight and #6 Mother Ruth. The former has consistent speed figures that are good enough to win at this level and she adores the Pro-Ride surface. The latter has been training like she?s fit and ready for Baffert and has the strong benefit of the cozy outside post.

State bred maidens sprint down the hill in the fourth race and this looks like a spread, as none are what you?d call trustworthy. #1 Hot Damon is wheeled back in five days by Gary Stute after disappointing in a mile affair. He ran okay down the hill at Oak Tree and could be a factor despite the short rest. #4 Dohnster is reunited with Rosario and has a race down the hill vs. straight (open) maidens that could win. He?s a route to sprint play and is back with Calbreds today. #8 Top Feeling has been away almost a year but has trained fairly well and gets Bejarano. These are the three we?d recommend using but if you can afford to go deeper please do so.

The fifth race is for bottom rung maiden claimers and we?ll try to survive using only #1 Steel Blade and #5 T. W.?s Tank. Steel Blade drops into a claimer for the first time (we always like that angle) and we?ll use him despite the fact he?ll have to leave from the dreaded rail. T. W.?s Tank makes a major trainer switch to Periban, removes blinkers, and seems sure to improve a ton under these circumstances.

Another downhill turf raffle occupies the sixth race. This is another heat you may want to spread, but we?re going to use only #1 Surfer Dave and #2 Boo Too. Surfer Dave, a route to sprint shipper from Golden Gate Fields, looks intriguing for high percentage trainer Steve Miyadi and figures to do his best running from off the pace. Boo Too adds blinkers and has a strong look off his game all weather victory at Hollywood Park two runs back.

Today?s feature is for fillies and mares in the entry level allowance ranks and could be won by either #3 Barbara?s Love or #9 Underground, and we?ll use them both in all of our exotics. Barbara?s Love, freshened and dangerous, likes to win races and should find herself in a good stalking spot behind the leaders. She?s reunited with Talamo, who has won with her in the past. Underground, from her lovely outside post, has trained sharply for Baffert for her local debut and her eastern speed figures make her strictly the one to beat.

The finale is a low level restricted claimer for fillies and mares, and the class dropping #8 Saint Cindy seems to have found an ideal spot to return to winning form. Exiting a series of very competitive starter?s allowance races, the Gary Mandella-trained miss should be doing her best running from off the pace, compliments, perhaps, of a rally wide bias. #10 I Swear must leave from the 10-hole but she?s a first-off-the-claim for Kruljac (an excellent angle) and is another who should benefit from a track that may very well promote those with a deep closing style.
