TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

Full Effect - Ran two good races since dropping down for a price tag; big rider switch to Joel Rosario for the money shot.

Cookie's Jewel - Logical chalk with the addition of Rafael Bejarano; the less starts the better at this bottom level.

Long Shot - Kissed

Race 2 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $48,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Lexlenos - Was flattered in last when Van Brit won her next start; 10-of-13 in the money, she is long overdue for victory.

Playa Bonita - Paddy Gallagher invitational as he has 2-of-5 starters in the race; could easily make for the quinella.

Long Shot - Scarlett's Place

Race 3 - 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds

Romance Is Family - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; from the live Mike Mitchell barn.

Saarface - Good late run in last, racing first time for a price tag; stretching out in distance, Joel Rosario takes over.

Long Shot - Guadalupe Lupe

Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds

Flashmans Papers - Third start off a 2-month hiatus; big class dropper from Ben Cecil, cleaning out the barn before Hollywood.

Captain Kali - Speedball must avoid dueling with Tactful; Jeff Mullins adds blinkers on, a clear signal of intent.

Long Shot - One Vote

Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Broken Silence - Makes her second start since joining the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; expect her to keep improving.

Khendum - Logical chalk ran well in second career start and turf debut; John Shirreffs babies improve with experience.

Long Shot - Molly Peaches

Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds

Victory Dancer - Part owned by Jon Lindo, is dropped into a very wi0nable spot; like the rider switch to Joel Rosario.

Silent Stalk - Been close, but no cigar, lately; Julio Canani switches to his main man Martin Pedroza, expect more patience.

Long Shot - Past Curfew

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $49,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Manhattan Beach - Dull run in last when faded badly late; can lead or follow, the turf rail is out 30 feet today.

Minute Limit - Parking lot post is perfect for this dead late closer; key will be if Manhattan Beach is lone early speed.

Long Shot - Royal Taat

Race 8 - 5 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Poetic Riches - Her two seconds make her look like Secretariat in here; one of the worst fields you will ever see in SoCal.

Senior Security - This field looks like a $5k maiden claimer at Mountaineer; the field added together isn't worth $32k.

Long Shot - Horchata

Best Bet - Manhattan Beach (race 7)

Santa Anita Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/6/$34.00; Long Shots, 8/1/$11.20; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.20

Santa Anita Totals - 972/251/$1,664.80; Long Shots, 475/77/$802.40; Best Bets, 58/20/$100.00

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #1 Buddha Pass (5/1) in race 5 at Oaklawn Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Wednesday, Duke Skywalker ran second at Charles Town paying $2.80 to place and $2.20 to show. Stats - 59/45/$345.60
