Usually you'll hear people say that sports are a better bet because the takeout/vig is less for sports. But I've found thru personal experience and of professional bettors that I've met, the potential for profit is greater in horse racing. I've only known one guy who bet sports for a living full time, and he's gone thru very rough times the past 2 years. I know around 8-10 full time horse bettors in Chicago and they've been doing it full time for at least 15 years. Exotic wagering and the lure of big scores make racing the superior wagering game, IMO. And from a handicapping standpoint, a field of 10-12 horses is a much more complex puzzle to solve than a game involving 2 teams. I'm considering quitting sports betting to concentrate more on racing.

v. only investing fulltime since fall h.p. meet.don't need to make a living just trying to supplment my s.s.d. (m.s. put me out of work three years ago,odds 1 out of 1000)been playing on and off since 1985.quit sports betting this fall also to devote more time to pony's.it has paid off so far even with the small fields at s.a.,and computers spitting out plays for every track.there still seems to be value every day.i 'm limited to a 56k dail up connection for now,so its very hard to trip capp. and see the fit horse due to bad video.read the charts every morning take notes and try to visuallize what happened.not getting rich but do show a profit.the important thing is i'm doing something i enjoy and challenges the mind daily.hey whatever happened to travis hightower thought he had some potential when i used to see him at s.p.wonder if he's still riding?

I prefer horses to games. I think there is more satisfaction to picking a 12 or 15 dollar horse. Exotics are tuff that doesn't mean I don't play them. Everyone knows that you're supposed to bet to win only but I don't know anyone who does that. If you pick YOUR race I really think you can show a profit. When my dad was here we used to go over every race. Find someone that wants to go over the form with you,2 heads are better that one when it comes to horse racing.

My son got married on Travers day last year and it was the first one we missed in over 20 years....
I used to have a place on Cossayuna Lake in Argyle/Greenwich
Lotta bass in that lake..........but as kids grew up...it didnt get the use....and we sold it. Still get up to Saratoga Springs several times a year. Love it up there!

Travis Hightower? There's a name from the past. Wasn't he a Midwest rider? I was at Oaklawn for awhile in 1986 and I think he was riding there. I could be wrong on this but I remember one professional horse bettor telling me that he (Hightower) was a bit of a partier. I could be mixing him up w/somebody else, but that statement could apply to most of the riders there at the time except for Pat Day and a couple others.
So you follow SoCal, right? A year or 2 ago I saw a guy named Marco Salazar was training a few horses at Hol and SA. Is he still there? This guy was the biggest crook in Chicago racing back in the late 80s early 90s. Around 1992, he just disappeared. All kinds of stories as to why he left; one story was he left his wife and just went away as far as possible but I suspect the vets and drug testers were about to nail him so he decided to leave before he got busted. He's worth watching if he still trains because his horses had miraculous turnarounds. Back in 1989-91 I would bet him blindly.

V. no signs of salazar out west or anywhere.do remember him shipping up to canterbury with great success though.hightower is still riding somewhere winning at about .8%.ran a search on both of them at turfday.com great place for jockey-trainer stats.
To me the best bet is horses.Think about this where else can you bet 12 times lose 10 and still come out ahead.

I would agree that the best win bets are not lower than 3-1 but I would say on the high side may stretch to 15-1.
