The winless Thrashers likely will have to go without Marian Hossa Wednesday night when they host Ottawa.
Hossa injured his groin at the end of practice Monday during a conditioning drill when his skate got caught in a rut, and he couldn't work out when he tried Tuesday morning.
"He's very doubtful," Thrashers coach Bob Hartley said. "It's so early in the season. We'll make sure we bring him back at 100 percent before he gets back on the ice. A groin can be a day or two; it can be four days. We're going to take the time that we need because obviously we don't want to carry this all year long."
Chris Thorburn will be in the lineup for the first time this season. Eric Perrin skated in Hossa's spot with Slava Koslov and rookie center Bryan Little during Tuesday's practice session. The Thrashers also could move Pascal Dupuis up from the third line.
"We might have a couple guys come in and out of that position," Hartley said. "Obviously to replace Marian Hossa is not something too many guys can do in this league."
Hossa, who came to Atlanta from Ottawa in the Dany Heatley trade two years ago, will miss a chance to face his former team. The Senators are 4-0 and have four goals from Heatley. Hossa has one of three goals for the 0-2 Thrashers.
"The season is long, so I don't want to screw it up even more," Hossa said.
