Blackhawks sign Hossa, Kopecky
In a surprising move, the Blackhawks made a huge splash on the free agent market for the second year in a row as they have signed veteran winger Marian Hossa to a 12-year contract.
Hossa, 30, is a four-time All-Star and was the top forward available after scoring 40 goals and adding 31 assists in helping the Detroit Red Wings reach the Stanley Cup finals. The Slovakia native also had a plus-27 rating and 63 penalty minutes.
The Hawks also signed former Wings center Tomas Kopecky to a two-year deal.
?To add Marian, an elite and world-class player, and Tomas, a Stanley Cup Champion, to our exciting young core reinforces our commitment to try to win the Stanley Cup,? Hawks general manager Dale Tallon said.
The Hawks are Hossa's fourth team in the last three seasons. After losing to the Red Wings in the 2008 Stanley Cup finals as a member of the Penguins, he left Pittsburgh to sign with Detroit, figuring that was his best opportunity to win the Cup. Instead, the Penguins defeated Hossa and the Wings in seven games for the NHL championship as Hossa struggled in the finals.
TSN reported the deal was believed to be worth $62 million over 12 years, which would be a salary cap hit of just over $5 million for next season.
The signing means the end of Martin Havlat's tenure with the Hawks. The unrestricted free-agent winger had expressed a desire to return to the Hawks and general manager Dale Tallon wanted him back, but Hossa's presence and salary made it too expensive to bring back the Hawks' leading scorer last season.
Hossa has played in 11 seasons in the NHL with Ottawa (1997-2004), Atlanta (2005-08), Pittsburgh (2008) and Detroit (2008-09), recording 719 points (339G, 380A) in 775 regular season games. He has appeared in 98 Stanley Cup Playoff games (31G, 45A), including reaching the Stanley Cup Final in each of the last two seasons.
The Trencin, Slovakia native was originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the first round (12th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
Kopecky, 27, also spent the 2008-09 season in Detroit, his fourth with the club. He finished second on the team with 109 hits while posting career highs with six goals, 13 assists and 19 points in 79 regular season games. The Ilava, Slovakia native also had an assist in eight Stanley Cup games with Detroit last season. He has appeared in 183 regular season games with the Red Wings over the last four seasons notching 32 points (12G, 20A) and 113 penalty minutes.
Kopecky was originally drafted by Detroit with their second choice (38th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and helped the team capture the Stanley Cup in 2008.
