I stole this from a post by
Dave Cokin, off another site:

Early season sizzlers and fizzlers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've put together the following list of players whose performances in April are either well above or below their normal level (five year records). Hopefully, this list can be of some use from both a betting and fantasy standpoint. Remember that there are several terrific stars who maintain solid paces throughout the season. They aren't listed here, unless their Aprils are either more spectacular or a lot poorer than the overall picture. It's a pretty lengthy list. Bear in mind that while these patterns aren't infallible, they're repeated more often than not.

Got anything to add, anyone?

Hudson did go 5-0 vs Anaheim in 2001, 1.20 era (2 home, 3 away). Anaheim and Oakland meet 7 times this April.

Boston does play NYY in April, and Burkett is 0-4 vs them, with 4.75 era.

WHatever Burkett did in the AL can be thrown out the window.

WHatever Burkett did in the AL can be thrown out the window.

Greg Maddux taught him more in two years then he learned his whole life. Don't yet know what to expect out of him but he should be a gamer.

I'll start posting some April #'s in your thread if you don't mind.
Coors field was 9-6-1 to the over last April.
There was usually one stud pitcher on the mound in the 6 unders.

Pedro Martinez was 4-2 to the under last April. We'll have to watch his health in spring training. Damon is a horrible leadoff hitter in April. but Nomar and Manny should be healthy this April which will make a huge difference. I would advise staying away from the Pedro Chalk and unders early on.

Scott Elarton was 4-1-1 to the over last April, move him to Coors where his breaking ball which he relies on will be flatter then hell then we have a good trend to watch.

I can't find any cold weather trends yet, but I will keep looking.

Commerica Park was 5-2 to the under in April last season when the opposing team had a pitcher with a career ERA of less than 4.00 with atleast 4 years experience. This is relevant due to the size of Commerica and the Tigers anemic offense.

Here is a really helpful tool.

Here is a really helpful tool.

Umpire #'s Here are a few that really stick out, this gives you an idea of the strike zone of the home plate umpires. For, example you might not want to bet the under in a game if you know the pitcher has to face a tight strike zone.

Tight strike zone's
Over/Under records.
Mike Everitt 20-12, 10.6 runs per game
Martin Foster 21-13 10.4 runs per game
Angel Hernandez 22-14 11.1 runs per game
Derryl Cousins 21-14 10 runs per game
Greg Gibson 19-13 11 runs per game
Charlie Relaford 19-13 10.4 runs per game

Wide strike zone's
OVer, under records
Bill Miller 9-25 7.9 runs per game
John Hirshbeck 8.5 runs per game
Phil Cuzzi 11-22 7.8 runs per game
Dan Iassogna 12-24 8.9 runs per game
Mark Hirshbeck 13-22 8.4 runs per game
Jerry Meals 12-20 8.6 runs per game.

These are just a few, I will post all the umpire info before every game this season so people won't be pissed when they bet the over and umpire calls everything within a foot of home plate a strike.

I learned refs the hard way

I learned refs the hard way

Boy, are you right Stewy!

I took the under last Aug 19 with expected pitcher duel between Hudson and Buehrle.

I check back in 6th inning, and find the score something like 5-4!

Next column over was news story about how mild-mannered CWS skipper J. Manuel ejected in 5th for arguing strikes and balls.

Right then I knew I blew it. Didn't check the ref stats. Fichter avgs 10.7 runs a game. With that strike zone these corner specialists had to throw it straight down the middle and hope and pray. Final score 8-7!!

I think Sosa may start a little slow. He usually gets rolling when the weather gets hot. I just saw him on TV. He looks huge, maybe 240-245 and not cut. It'll take some time for him to get in shape.
