Housing Authority Director Accused Of Stealing $170K Meant To Help Poor


EAST HAVEN, Conn. -- The executive director of the East Haven Housing Authority in Connecticut faces 15 years in prison and fines totaling $500,000 if found guilty of stealing more than $170,000 from a federal program set up to assist low income individuals, prosecutors told WNBC.com.

Cassandra Ashe, 36, and her husband Jonathan Ashe, 43, both of North Haven, were arrested early Tuesday on federal charges of conspiracy and theft of federal funds, Acting U.S. Attorney Nora Dannehy said.

According to court papers, during a 10 month period, Cassandra Ashe and her husband made 253 separate ATM withdrawals totaling $173,000 from a bank account set up to administer U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 8 funds intended to provide assistance in obtaining rental housing to qualifying low income individuals.

Both Ashe?s were released on $200,000 bonds following a court appearance, prosecutors said.
