Sydney - An Australian parking attendant issued a parking citation for a car whose owner lay dead inside.
Melbourne local council apologised for the oversight on Thursday, saying the officer believed the driver was sleeping in his illegally parked vehicle.
Council spokesperson Stephen Sabbatucci said the car was parked in a forbidden spot and the employee had followed standard procedure.
"The officer attempted to wake the man by tapping on the window and speaking to him as is standard practice," Sabbatucci said in a statement.
"After no response, the parking officer issued the infringement notice, assuming the man was sleeping." He explained that the officer had not tried harder to wake the driver because this might have resulted in a confrontation.
"The parking officer honestly believed that the person in the car was intoxicated and sleeping it off," he said.
Police confirmed the man had been dead for some time when the ticket was issued.
"This is an unfortunate incident and our condolences are with the man's family," the statement read.
