how important are special teams?

this fun vid makes the case for how sp teams contributed in decent part to the 2010 SD chargers demise.


the chargers have always been an anomaly to me, but even i didn't know in 2010 the chargers: ranked 1st in yardage gained, on offense, and 1st in ydg allowed on defense. So by NFL metrics had the best defense -and offensive units --and-- missed the playoffs

so then, who among the teams still alive have the best/worst... most mention-worthy special team units/players?

heres what i think i know about squads still alive

that titans punter is good

balt has one the best kickers in Justin Tucker

--i believe Harbaugh (Balt) cut his teeth in the league, starting as sp teams coach

past that, i haven't followed these squads close enough to know who would be players to keep eye on --ie. return unit that can flip the field

what says you MJ football world? Who among the remaining teams has a 3rd unit that could contribute / or blow up / or put in position to win, their squads chances this week?

thus Special Teams comes down to kick coverage to down the punts and Field Goals ...

from what i gather, kc gets more from their sp teams, than other squads do

tenn apparently gets no help in scoring from their special teams - as are dead last in fg/xp category - whereas bal is #1 -- mostly due to lots of scoring opps in fg and tds (kc 5, gb 7, minn 10, sea 18)

Not sure where these numbers come from and ranking but with 4 weeks to go in the season Green Bay had negative yards in punt returns. They were on pace for the worst in the history of the NFL

If I were to rank special teams

For kickers I want them to make the kicks inside 50 yards at a high percentage

For Punters I want them to pin the opponents inside the 20 yard line.

Punt returns to me seems to be a relatively unimportant. There are not many long punt returns in the NFL, Mostly fair catches or returns less than 10 yards.

Similar for kick offs. Most dont get returned anymore.

I would be more emphasis on the kickers.
