Types of Bets
The three most common bets on an NFL game are a moneyline bet, a point spread bet, and a bet on the Total score. Of the three, betting on the point spread is the most popular. Understanding how each bet works is the first step to having success as a sports bettor.

Point Spread Bet
A point spread is determined by oddsmakers at a sportsbook to give one team an advantage or disadvantage based on the expected margin of victory or defeat in any given game. The point spread also works to attract equal action on both sides of a bet.

In the example above, the Saints are a seven-point favorite and the Falcons a seven-point underdog. If you are wagering on New Orleans to wi, the Saints must win by eight or more points to win your bet. Always be aware and look for real time sports betting odds.
If you bet on Atlanta, you need the Falcons to lose by fewer than six points or win the game. If the game ended in a score of 28-21, for example, the result would be a ?push? and the amount of your bet would be refunded.
Each bet is assigned odds as well. Normally, odds are assigned at (-110), which means you must wager $110 to win $100 on a favorite.

If New Orleans wins 33-14 and you bet $110 on the Saints, you would win a total of $210. You receive your $110 bet plus $100 of winnings.
If New Orleans wins 33-30 and you bet on Atlanta, the Falcons ?covered? the spread which means you win. In that case, your $100 bet would earn you winnings of $110.
Moneyline Bets
A moneyline bet is much simpler than a point spread bet. You pick one team to win. You will see moneyline odds expressed as in the example below.

If you bet on the favored Saints, you would need to wager $160 t
o win $100. A winning bet on the underdog Atlanta Falcons, would earn you $140 on a $100 wager.
Total Bets
The Total is the projected combined score of both teams at the end of a game. You can wager on whether the actual Total will be Over or Under the projected Total. These are great wagers for those that like to spend some time handicapping sports.
Again, the Over and the Under are given odds, usually -110.

If you bet the final score will be more than 48.5 points, you must wager $110 to win $100. If the final score of 33-30, the total of 63 points is, of course, Over the projected Total and you are a winner.
