How do you handle in a job interview that you are leaving your current job because you feel you are under compensated?

Simple.

Tell them you are looking to better provide for your family. Dont tell them you feel under compensated.

I'd just flat out tell them - I work for a penny pinching bastard that doesn't pay me what I am worth. I'm interviewing with your company because I heard you guys pay big money for this so here I am. *give them a wink and a nod once you say this too*

or tell them you are looking to move up the responsibility ladder and take on some new challenges.

pharse everything in terms of taking on new responsibilities and challenges and the money will be there.

I wouldn't directly mention money at all. If you do that, they may view you as someone who would leave at the drop of a hat once you find something that pays better, and there's always something that pays better. I would agree with Marine, mention wanting a new challenge, more responsibilities, etc., but I wouldn't directly mention salary.

DO NOT tell them you're leaving because you feel that you're under compensated. I'm not saying it will but 90% of the HR directors I work with would consider that a big mark against you. If you're willing to leave you current job for more money then more than likely you'll leave them for more as well. There's a long list of things that even if they're true you just don't say.

On what to say-it really depends on what you do and what job you're interviewing for.

Agreed. I just think HR Directors/interviewers are turned off by applicants who talk money in interviews, especially if it's a FIRST interview. It just comes off as being tacky, even if it's the reason you are leaving your current job.

One exception MIGHT be a sales job, where talking money seems to be par for the course. You could maybe mention that your previous job paid commissions that were below the industry standard and that you're looking for something that's more in line with that standard. Still, I probably wouldn't volunteer that information unless it was asked of me, and even then I would have to "feel out" the interviewer in order to determine whether it would be appropriate.
