in all seriousness:

grand valley state should cover that number saturday in ncaa division II.

grand valley the #4 seed playing AT #3 seed kingsville and gvsu is layin 12. defending champs from 2002. runner-up the yr before. their only loss this year was to the #1 team in the nation (saginaw valley), whom they just beat in the revenger last week 10-3. gvsu is a scoring machine when they get it going. their offensive speed is sick.

in division III, i think wheaton hangs within that number. no secret that mount union is a juggernaut, but wheaton a well-balanced team that knocked off a good baldwin-wallace team last week.

dont have an account at 5dimes, just like to diversify my football knowledge. some solid D-2 programs out there.

amazing that 5dimes hung lines on those high school games. probably shouldnt be surprised, since they did offer lines on a lot of lebrons svsm games last year.

Here are some papers write-ups on Hoover vs. Daphne in Alabama...

CLASS 6A Daphne (14-0) vs. Hoover (14-0) The game: Saturday, Legion Field, 3 p.m.:

From Our Advertiser

The coaches: Steve Savarese, Daphne (262-72); Rush Propst, Hoover (129-50-0).

The playoffs: Second-ranked Daphne has win over Auburn (56-20), 10th-ranked Jeff Davis (35-14), third-ranked Opelika (38-14) and Vigor (38-6). Hoover has downed Huffman (50-15), eighth-ranked Minor (38-3), Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (24-0) and fifth-ranked Vestavia Hills (31-24 in OT).

Key stats: Hoover is making an unprecedented fourth straight appearance in the 6A final. Daphne is making its third appearance in four years. Daphne comes in with a 14-game win streak and has scored 609 points (tops in the state) for 43.5 ppg. The Trojans have allowed 14.1 ppg. Hoover averages 34.5 ppg and allows 14.1.

Worth watching: Daphne senior QB Patrick White, 54-of-107 passing, 1,432 yards, 15 touchdowns; 168 carries, 1,768 yards rushing, 30 TDs; RB Justin Stanton, 138 carries, 1,146 yards, 17 TDs; RB Byron Mosely, 114 carries, 970 yards, 6 TDs; WR Wendell Maye, 15 catches, 673 yards (44.8 per catch), 10 TDs. Hoover: QB John Parker Wilson (294-of-438 passing, 3,581 yards, 398 TDs, 8 int.; RB Jared Bryant, 76 carries, 416 yards, 3 TDs; RB/WR B.T. Hartloge, 51 carries, 378 yards, 6 TDs, 61 catches, 592 yards, 7 TDs; WR Mason Dueitt, 59 catches, 965 yards, nine TDs; WR Cornelius Williams, 45 catches, 594 yards, 5 TDs; LB Curtis Dawson, 117 tackles, 10 sacks; DB David Smetek, 4 int.; LB Matt Joiner, 80 tackles; DL Steven Tajer, 64 tackles, 9 sacks; DE Jeramie Holifield, 64 tackles, 8 sacks.

Outlook: QBs Patrick White of Daphne and John Parker Wilson of Hoover are two of the three finalists for Class 6A back of the year. Both play key roles - without them either team could be in trouble offensively. While the offenses usually get the top billing, both defenses have great speed. The key for Daphne is to slow down the Bucs' passing game. The key for Hoover is the defensive line's ability to slow the Trojans' rush. Ron Ingram's pick: Hoover 34, Daphne 31.

Daphne learned its lesson

Hoover showed Trojans the need for speed on defense three years ago

12/03/03

By MIKE HERNDON
Sports Reporter

Daphne coach Steve Savarese said it all started in 2000.

From Our Advertiser

Hoover receivers ran through the Daphne defense at will in the 6A state championship game that year, galloping across the Legion Field turf with precious little resistance en route to a 28-7 victory.

Why didn't the Trojans do something to slow the Bucs down? They couldn't catch them.

"They were faster than we were," Savarese said. "When you have to rush the passer 40 times a game and you've got these 280-pound defensive linemen, I don't care how good a shape they're in, they're going to get awful tired.

"We learned a very valuable lesson that first year. We came back and we said we're going to put athletes out there who can run all over the field."

Suddenly, defensive backs became linebackers. Linebackers became defensive linemen. The result was a much quicker Daphne squad that beat Hoover 48-21 the next year for the Trojans' first state championship.

Fast forward two years and Savarese is still putting that lesson to use. The 2003 Trojan defense relies on speed and flexibility. And who should be waiting for them in the 6A state championship game again this year but those same Hoover Bucs.

Hoover coach Rush Propst noticed the difference in the Daphne defense in 2001 and he sees the same qualities in this year's unit.

"They're faster at every position than we are," said Propst, whose Bucs (13-1) will meet Daphne (14-0) at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Birmingham's Legion Field. "That presents a big problem for us."

There was a time this year, however, when Daphne's defense looked less than formidable, particularly in the secondary. Theodore quarterback Tim King carved up the Trojans for 202 yards in the first quarter of a midseason game to give the Bobcats a 35-28 halftime lead.

Of course, the second half of that game told a totally different story. Javaris Johnson intercepted King's first pass of the second half to set up a touchdown and the Trojans shut out the Bobcats the rest of the way for a 56-35 victory.

Daphne defensive coordinator Rick Chancery said he didn't change much as far as Xs and Os at halftime of that game -- other than maybe a little more bump and run -- but the lessons his defense learned were immense.

"To be honest with you, that was probably the turning point in the year for us defensively," Chancery said. "Since that game, we've only given up 21 points in the second half of our last nine football games. We do have a tendency to give up big plays, usually early in the game. We're aggressive and sometimes that's to our advantage, but sometimes it may be to our disadvantage too.

"I think one reason we've played better back there (in the secondary) is our defensive front. We're getting a lot of pressure on the quarterback. That's the best pass defense you can get."

Daphne has faced a couple of other spread-style offenses in the playoffs and has performed well, holding Jeff Davis and Opelika to 14 points apiece. The Trojans then turned in a commanding performance in last week's 38-6 win over Vigor, surrendering only 152 yards.

"They've consistently gotten better," Savarese said of his defense. "I think we're playing our best right now that we've played all year."

Johnson is one of the players that give the unit flexibility, playing linebacker in Daphne's base defense and safety against spread formations. He said the unit's progress through the season has been a matter of cutting down mistakes.

"At the beginning of the season, we played real good but we made careless mistakes," he said. "As the season went on, we cut out our mistakes and everything started coming together."

They'll need to be at their best against a Hoover offense that scores points in bunches. Quarterback John Parker Wilson has completed 294 of 438 passes for 3,581 yards and 38 touchdowns, with B.T. Hartloge catching 61 passes for 592 yards and seven scores. Daphne knows all about Wilson, as he threw for 358 yards in the teams' last meeting in 2001.

"John Parker is the best quarterback we'll face all year," said Chancery, whose defense intercepted Wilson four times in the 2001 game. "Now we may have faced better athletes at the quarterback position, but as far as being the best quarterback, he's the best we've played.

"You're not going to stop them. You just have to try to limit to the best of your ability their big plays and tackle well. And even though they're a throwing team, we've got to stop the running game."

The eight seniors on Daphne's defense remember Hoover well. Aside from facing the Bucs in a 7-on-7 camp last summer, most of them were on the 2000 and the 2001 squads that played Hoover at Legion Field. Those seniors, many of whom have played ball together since middle school, are taking it upon themselves to make sure their teammates are ready for the task at hand.

"As a senior class, we've got to keep everybody focused and knowing that we're not going up for a field trip," said senior Trojan linebacker Greg Smith. "We're going up with a purpose."

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK TO YOU...

hoover will win the game by a touchdown in overtime.....have watched both teams play this year and daphne is good especially the qb but even though they stopped teams like opelika and jeff davis they haven't seen one like hoover's with the execution....also hoover's defense is their strength imo....i watched them play evangel christian this year in hoover and hoover won by a touchdown but the game was not as close as the score would indicate and evangel got a late junk touchdown....hoover rolls
