Wash St HSF Champ.
Fri.
O'Dea -11' Rainier Beach (58)

3 units Rainer Beach +11' LOSS
*I had thought I would be backing the "Fighting Irish" of O'Dea when formulating my initial thoughts on this 3A Title game.....I looked at my notes from an earlier O'Dea game (with Eastside Catholic) and the name Jamyn Patu is still the workhorse he was in the season infancy.. This young man is really remarkable as he has amassed 1,921 yards on 215 carries, also scoring 26 Tds...the RB averages 151.1 rush yards per game... The 6'0" 195 lb Sr is a bruising running back that can be very elusive.... He plays right into HC Monte Kohler game plan of ground and pound, moving the clock and keeping possession.... Kohler has coached at at O'Dea for 3 decades... The offensive philosophy works with a fairly massive and athletic o-line that features 3A Metro Mountain Div Offensive Lineman of the Year..Griffen Korican.... The Irish is well coached and loaded with talent (some D1) up and down the roster.... QB Emonte Scott (Jr 6'3" 180 lbs) is an effective passer and will take it down and scoot as a dual threat...... The program is returning to the State Title after losing last year to Kamiakin in OT....

It isn't all bad when this team plays in OT contrary to last year's Championship result, as last week Patu had 259 yards w/3 Tds on 30 carries as O'Dea survived a nail biter by beating perennial power Bellevue (the team that upended CA Power DeLaSalle Win Streak) 34-33 in 2 OT, when Bellevue kicker missed wide right on the PAT.... Note: O'Dea does have a very good special teams play with Kicker Stephen Powell making a 22 yarder to force OT last week......

Rainier Beach has the distinction of no other school has played in more 3A State Title Games (in Basketball)(12) just ahead of another WA St school... O'dea (8)..In fact the Vikings Beat the Irish in the 2016 State Basketball Championship. Vikings are in their first State Football Championship after defeating Garfield last week... *The game was the first time 2 Seattle Public Schools had faced off in the Semi's. I guess what really needs to be mentioned here is that Garfield upset (quite miraculously) Eastside Catholic to advance to the Semis... Many people predicted and assumed that E Catholic would roll through the playoffs into the title game..... QB for Rainier is a transfer from Garfield, Sr Max Nall is 165 for 255 with 2,817 yards w/25 Tds...
In last weeks game he was 15 of 24 for 212 yards w/1 TD, he also contributed 10 carries for for 52 yards rushing and a TD.... His goto receiver is Mason Starling (73 receptions for 1,532 yards w/20 Tds.) Defensively, Rainier is very stout with the front 7 and in the secondary where the Coaches kid Darrien Sampson helps lead the D.... HC Corey Sampson played for Franklin-Pierce in 1990 & 1991 he went on to play at Northeast LA where he was tied for 5th in the Nation with 6 INTs in 1995...

Both schools are nearly identical in stats with O'Dea holding a slight advantage with 38.1 points per game while Falcons average 35 ppg..... Defensively, O'dea holds teams to 14.25 while Rainier holds at 19.58....When these two met on Oct 6, O'dea walked away 27-12 victory, however, perhaps there should be an asterisk next to this game as Rainier Beach was without 5 starters for that game (3 are D1 bound).... I'm not altogether sure that the line has accounted for this and I'm not convinced that the Falcons can't get a win, but I'll take the points in what could be a fairly low scoring, defensive minded game that may come down to a possession....

Lean to the Under 58

CA Div 1 Final

Mater Dei -9 St John Bosco (60')

3 Units OVER 60'......WIN

*Not alot to really say about this game... Pitting National #1 Mater Dei against #5 St J Bosco.....I really like the OVER here as this could very well be a repeat of the 2016 Div 1 CIF-SS game that ended with Bosco 42-28......I actually don't believe Bosco is going to win this game, however, I saw enough to know that Bosco Super Soph QB (6'5" 240 lbs) DJ Viagalelei (2,733 yards w/29 TDs (only 2 INT) also rushed for 331 yards) wasn't/and won't be intimidated by Mater Dei size and speed... The loss to Mater Dei 31-21 in the Trinity League face off, showed me a young man with a huge arm and fast legs that Mater Dei had problems stopping.... The loss reminds me of the Bosco-Mater Dei tilt of 2016 when Monarchs won 26-21 then Bosco returned the favor in the all important Championship.

Monarchs haven't won a title since 1999 and are way overdue...The Oline is immense and keeps Jr record setting QB (3,591 yards w/44 TDs & run for 479 yards w/7 TDs) safe and sound... Mater Dei shut down the high powered offense of Mission Viejo lw holding them to 14...

So I guess it's Mater Dei or Mater Die? Who knows in what could very well be a toss up.... I do think that these offenses should have a leg up after already seeing each other, so 60 feels light.... I may come make a play on Bosco + but want to see where the points go tomorrow..

Defense that nite sucked. Said they were too cocky--looking forward to playing Pamona again. Glad to see them get beat

Not sure what I want to do about this Stanford / USC game...

Been mocking the hell out of these CA Section Title games... Here's what I played:

Div 2 CIF-SS

Oaks Christian +7' Valencia (65')

3 units on Valencia -7' 3 units on the Over 65' LOSS/LOSS Not exactly sure what happened to the high wire act of Valencia offense...Nice work Oaks

Vikings high powered offense trumps strengths of Oaks Christian Lions in just about every category... Really like the way these Vikings are clicking on all cylinders... Offense averages a mind numbing 54.7 ppg... RB tandem of Moises Haynes and J Wilson have combined for over 2,300 yards w/28 TD.... QB Connor Downs (Sr 6'1" 195 lbs) has passed for average of 232.7 yards per game and his Coach took the shackles off him to add yardage with his legs for the playoffs..... Vikings last visited Championship game in 2013, but has never won a title..

Oaks Christian stunned everyone by upsetting the #1 ranked team Upland 31-24 when the opportunistic Defense took a INT back to the house with 10 seconds remaining and the win..... Team is trying to win 8th Section Title in program history and last crown in 2010....The team is lead offensively by QB (Jr 6'2" 215 lbs) Josh Calvert who averages 189 pass yards per game.... RB Zack Charbonnet (Jr 6'2" 215 lbs) has rushed for 1, 746 yards w/22 Tds..

Valencia is looking for the gold and think they win this one comfortably....its Lone loss was to high powered Calabasas a 65-63 agonizer... Oaks are riding an 8 game streak but think it comes to an end Tonight

CIF Div 3 SS Final

Rancho Verde -2' St Francis (65')

2 units St Francis +2' WIN.. By the hook

Lean to Under 65'

Well had a decent write up and lo and behold system crash... Oh well, not real excited about this game as it pits 2 of the Top Underclassmen QBs in SoCal.... These two look eerily similar when comparing box stats.... St Francis Golden Knights is led by Jr QB (6'0 205 lbs) who has been heating up passing for 1,273 yards w/13 Tds in the 4 playoff games.. (I watched an interview with this kid and he stated that the game was really slowing down and he was seeing the whole field) which is something I like to hear as a Coach, Teammate, Parent and Degenerate Gambler!...

St Francis hasn't won a Section Championship since winning back to back titles in 1963 & 1964...a long 53 years ago....

Rancho Verde Mustangd are coached by an Inland Empire Legend HC Jeff Steinberg.... Their Soph QB Brock White (has passed for 2,734 yards w/35 tds) He will run when necessary but the Coach likes to keep him in the pocket... The Defense has been forcing turnovers, like last week in a 41-22 victory where the Mustangs converted 3 of 5 takeaways into 3 Tds....

I lookee at one common opponent, a Citrus Hill game where Mustangs lost 21-3 while Knights won 30-20...Really think the wrong team is favored here, but you never know with young Qbs..... This one will probably be decided by the turn-over battle and ability to turn into points... I give the edge to St Francis...

Perhaps I should go back to flipping coins...

Sat:

WA 4A Champ

Richland pk Woodinville (48')

**5 units on Under 48'LOSS by the hook... FOK, though I had this one pegged..Richland D allowed Wood to make some cheap TDs. Sorry if you followed

No lean on Winner

*Richland Bombers has enjoyed immense success over the past 3 years (in those years, Bombers have won 38 games and 3 Mid-Colombia Conf Titles, reaching State Semis in 2015 and a Championship game last year) Team is looking to capture 3rd Crown in School History...This is their 5th Title Game Appearance, but first time back to back title game losing to Camas 24-14......

HC Mike Neidhold is in 10th season (83-30 lifetime) (15-9 playoffs rec) he is a graduate of Richland (1977) Has 4 League Titles too... Bombers average 45.5 ppg while the Defense holds opponents to 11.46 ppg... The D is Nasty and has held teams to Under 180 yards of total offense and 9 points or less in conference tilts... They have ball hawked to the tune of 10 INTs in these playoffs, 6 returned for TDs... QB Cade Jensen is 216 of 341 for 3,187 yards w/46 TDs (scout reports he is an affective game controller and has a good grasp on the balanced offense looks Richland gives)... Last week, they rolled over Central Valley 42-10...

Across midfield will be Woodinville Falcons, undefeated and a similar offense to Richland, offense averages 36.4 ppg, while the D allows a stingy 8.8 ppg..... Woodinvilles only 4A title appearance was a 35-21 loss to Skyline in 2005....Last 2 years, Falcons got beat in the State quarterfinals, so getting over the hump was pretty emotional for this group... QB Jaden Sheffey (154 of 252 for 1,780 yards w/18 TDs, 535 yards rushing w/12 TDs).... WR Nash Fouch has 54 receptions for 721 yards w/10 TDs (heading to Montana)....... Woodinville stakes its claim from their Defense called the "Dark Side" D which came about from their Coach that had played at Central Washington (NAIA) that brought a bad mentality to the Defense, plays fast, fearless, and aggressive.... The kids have bought in, they even implement the "Black Shirts" (of Nebraska lore) and the final product on the field can't be denied...... The Dark Side completely shut down high octane offense of Sumner last week 10-0.....(Sumner was loaded with D1 talent and averaging 43.3 ppg)... The HC of Sumner stated that Woodinville Seniors were the best group he had ever coached against... Woodinville also beat State power Graham-Kapowsin in the quarterfinals.....

This game should be an old fashioned hard hitting play game where points are a premium... I have this rated as my strongest total of the hsf games...The game is a pickem which is a coin flip at best.

A couple of more plays for the Foxboro HSF Championships, called the Super Bowl in MA..

Div 6 Final

Middleborough -6 Littleton (47')

3 units on Middleborough -6 WIN

Lean to the Under 47'

Littleton won State in 2013 and played in the 2014 Championship... The D is fast and has held teams to no more than 2 TDs since Week 5... Tigers are undefeated with a 11-0 record, with an offense averaging 36.9 ppg.... 8 Littleton players have rushed for TDs this season, but it's the Super tandem of RBs Brad Klock (over 1,000 yards rushing) and Mike Beaudoin that wear defenses out.... The oline has a massive Tackle Tommy Keenan that goes 6'5" 375 lbs....

Middleborough Sachems come in at 9-3 and this is their first Super Bowl Appearance in 34 years... The team seeks its 4th State Title... QB Evan Gwodz has 31 TDs and was the South Shore Player of the year... RB Jeremy Soule has over 1,400 yards w/15 TDs..... The team has devoted their season to the passing of a beloved Coach and Teacher who had coached for 30 years..... They wear his number (decal) on their helmets..... Middleborough appears to be the more hardened and battle tested squad...

I went ahead and backed the team with the "intangibles" and think this group wants it bad for their departed Coach.. Also, I had no idea what a Sachem was, so bonus points for a creative mascot!

Div 7 MA Final

Blackstone Valley Tech +14' Mashpee (44)

3 units on Mashpee -14' LOSS *Pee gets the W but not the cover

Lean to the Under

Blackstone Beavers have the unique distinction of the first Vocational School to play at Gillette Stadium since 2007 (Greater Lawrence) The team boasts one of the best defenses in the State... They have recorded 3 shut-outs on the year and held first 8 games to single digits.... The offense averages 27.8 ppg (which translates to you better play good defense with an offensive output like that)... RB Connor Polymerc (927 rush yards w/11 TDs) and Soph J. D. Antaya (1,400 rush/receive yards w/15 TDs) are the goto athletes on the offense..

Mashpee comes in at a perfect 12-0....Falcons have won back to back South Shore Titles, and seeks the programs 3rd State Championship over the last 4 seasons... 3rd straight appearance to bring back the hardware to Cape Cod.... The team is loaded with all star talent that includes TE Xavier Gonsalves (6'3" 230 lbs) who won the South Shore Player of the Year.... Also, joining him with accolades is Team Captain and SSL All-Star Ben Bohnenberger (6'4" 285 lbs) Guard (heading to play at Colgate)... Also, RB Devaun Ford (has rushed for over 1,000 yards in 9 games) as he had a injury at the beginning of the season... The Oline is a Behemoth with Guard Roo Garcia (6'0" 280 lbs) and Center John McNamara (6'6' 275 lbs) and Tackles Toren Burton (6'1" 220) and Ian Ahearn (6'4" 230 lbs).... Sr QB Jake Johnston (All-Star) has 1,100 yards passing w/17 TDs & 11 rush TDs..... Last week in the playoff game with St Mary's, RB Ford carried 36 times for 253 yards on the ground w/2 TDs in a 28-20 win.. (the first time this team has been challenged this year..

I'm backing Mashpee despite the chalk chalk as the HC Matt Trivvier is in his 13th season (117-33) is going for his 4th State Title and has his team on a 19 game win streak including 14 straight post-season wins.

Mashpee has outscored its opponents 270-77 and the defense is ruthless... I look for the dominance to continue and for the Falcons to pull away with that huge Oline.

Sam Houston State

Sam Houston State

They are now a 6.5 point under dog. I hit them earlier in the week when they were +5.5 and I am shocked this number is back here. The total at 70.5 seems too low also.

I have stepped out here and have hit SHSU +5.5 and then just hit the moneyline +205 and the over 70.5 all max plays for me and then some.

I agree with the Sam Houston take. That is a lot of traveling and a lot of emotion the last 2 weeks for South Dakota. Had their Super Bowl versus South Dakota State and lost by 3. Then, went to Nicholls and had a game down to the last play, literally.
Now they fly to Texas to take on a high-powered offense. Think they run out of juice.

Div 1 MA Super Bowl Final

Everett -11 Xaverian Brothers (48')

3 units on Everett -11 WIN.. Easy cover

*This is the 6th meeting between these Div powers in the State Title..... The 3rd meeting in last 4 seasons... Everett tryings to win 2nd consecutive easi... HC John Dibiasio is in his 36th season (301-78)...... He is 11-5 in Super Bowls, post-season streak of 17 straight appearances... Last year, the Crimson beat the Hawks 21-7....in 2014, Xaverian got the W with a 38-29 victory...

Some believe that this year's version of the Crimson might be the best product that Everett has ever put on the field..... Which is saying something with a successful background and history... *Back in the day of Leather Helmets and Jock Straps (1914) roughly 5,000 spectator fans came out to watch Everett play Stamford in a contest that was decided by a 62-0 score (capping an undefeated (13-0) perfect season) That year Everett outscored sopponents 600-0 earning the label "The Greatest High School Football Team in History" by Sport Magazine (1960)

In this year's program, QB Jake Willcox (75% completion rate, for 2,126 yards w/26 TDs, only 3 picks) leads an offense averaging 43.6 ppg.... The OLine is max protect and features a gigantic 6'5" 300 lb Tackle (Helber Fagundes) as an example of the protection.... Willcox has several options to throw to in what might be the best group of Wide Receivers in the Nation.... Receivers like (6'5") Isaiah Likely is muscular and athletic, allows Willcox to throw the ball down field in thick coverage but have confidence to know that any of the 5 WRs will more than likely come down with it.... This fearsome bunch has learned to share accolades as a group, not individually...Opposing Coaches have stated that it's the best group of WRs they have ever played against (one Coach that backed this is has 36 years of experience under his belt)....

Xaverian has had a nice run through the playoffs and is quite a surprise as the record sits at 7-4......One of those losses was to Everett 38-7 on opening week... The fact that the Hawks only produce 25.4 points per game on offense gives me pause and its alot to expect the Defense to keep scores down..

I just can't see how Xaverian stays with the Crimson and this team has rolled over opponents all season long behind a prolific pass attack and underrated run game.... Team has Generational talent with numerous national recruits, speed everywhere, and a smart, athletic QB...... Their Coach credits the group with an outstanding work ethic and positive personalities.....Just can't believe that Xaverian is improved from that 31 point differential from earlier in the year and think we might have more of the same this afternoon..... Good luck with whatever you did.
