Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Hurricanes have hired Temple head coach Al Golden to lead their football program and replace the departed Randy Shannon.

Golden brought an Owls program back from the dead in the last four years, leading Temple to a nine-win season in 2009 and an eight-win campaign this year. In his first season, the Owls went 1-11 in their final year of football independence.

"From the beginning of this process, one candidate stood out above the rest as the right fit for the University of Miami," said director of athletics Kirby Hocutt. "We are proud to welcome Al Golden to The U. His desire, leadership, communications skills and preparedness stood above the rest, and he is the right man to meet the championship expectations of this program." Temple, a former member of the Big East, was forced to leave the conference after posting losing records in all 14 seasons since joining in 1991. Golden helped lead the Owls into the Mid-American Conference, and they have posted at least a .500 conference mark in each of their four seasons there.

Additionally, Golden helped lead Temple to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1978-79.

A Penn State alumnus and former coach with the Nittany Lions, Golden would take over a Miami program that has fallen on hard times since winning the national title in 2001.

The Hurricanes have lost at least four games in each of the last four seasons and haven't posted a 10-win season since winning 11 in 2003.

Shannon served as the head coach at Miami for the last four seasons but never finished better than second in the ACC's Coastal Division, compiling a 28-22 mark with a 16-16 record in conference play.
