Police: Nagging prompts drugging

A Stevens Point man faces prison time if convicted of spiking his wife's ice cream with a prescription painkiller.

Gary L. Guinn, 42, 1225 Fourth Ave., faces one felony charge of delivery of a controlled substance, plus a penalty enhancement because the incident occurred within 1,000 feet of a school. If convicted, Guinn could go to prison for at least three years, with a maximum term of 11 years. He also could be fined up to $6,000.

According to a criminal complaint, Guinn's wife called police March 23 after biting into a scoop of ice cream from a blended flurry treat that her husband had brought back from Belt's Soft Serve. Something in the ice cream tasted bitter, and she immediately spit it out and reported it to the ice cream stand and police.

Investigators sent the suspicious substance to the State Crime Laboratory in Madison, which determined it to be a small piece of Vicodin, a popular prescription painkiller.

On April 1, Guinn told an investigator he had mixed pieces of a Vicodin tablet into the ice cream, according to the complaint.
He said he did so because she had been nagging him since returning from a recent trip to Tennessee after he failed to complete some chores he had promised to do. Guinn told the investigator he got the Vicodin from his doctor for pain management after a recent operation, the complaint said.

Guinn tried to cover his tracks after his wife bit into the Vicodin fragment by telling her he had taken the flurry back for a refund, but he never did so, the complaint said.

A pre-trial conference was scheduled for July 14 after Guinn waived his rights to a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Por-tage County Circuit Court. Guinn remains free on a signature bond.
