I have to qualify this post by saying that the vast majority of what you read from the National Review is junk.

This column, however, should be read by all opponents of liberalizing the current immigration laws. We need to let more immigrants in legally so that the desire to come in legally is reduced. You don't break the law when you feel that a legal solution is reasonably attainable. Laws that are broken as indiscriminantly as our current immigration laws reveal more problems with the laws than the people who are breaking them.

These idiots who argue that we must secure the borders first are living in a fantasy land. We must open up the borders to more closely match the need for unskilled labor first. Then we can put together a plan that has a chance in heck of truly protecting the borders.

(Again, I have to quote a conservative on this one.) George Will was right when he said that, "morality absent practicality is immorality." It's simply impractical to secure the borders without increasing the number of unskilled workers allowed in first.

Who's the bigger criminal among a moral majority: the illegal immigrant looking for a chance to work (and driving around without a license and insurance because there is no means for compliance), or the country club members that make fortunes in their businesses by hiring 25 or 250 or 2500 undocumented workers to do their bidding (with a couple of domestics thrown in for good measure)?

If it had served the interests of the powers that be in this country to control illegal immigration, it would have happened 30 years ago . . . But at some point, a circumstance can become so ingrained in the whole fabric of the society that even the powers that be can't wish it away, even if they were so inclined to make it a priority of policy and resources.
