Did you happen to mention working for a sportsbook in England to anyone ?

Yeah, those people are f...ing crazy. But your biggest mistake was saying you were looking for work and you were staying with a friend. Work immigration is a big big deal over there. I got sent over there by my company without a work visa, had to enter the country twice within a matter of weeks. Major red flags. Got put into the "immigration questioning room", but I was prepared, long story short is I went the exact opposite route. I lied my ass off. Dressed like a rich freak, got an enormous amount of cash, hid my laptop and work stuff in a backpack (which they luckily never searched) , told them I was a trust fund baby there to see a girl. Gave them then name of a girl I had previously "had relations with" and made up an address for her on some street I had seen in Chiswick near her house and gave them her old work phone number which was the only number I had for her. Figured if they let me go, by the time they found me the job would be over and even if they did put me in Jail, that was probably better than going to the client. Only problem is I'm going through London this June, and my passport still has the "if this guy tries to come through here again" stamp in it. So I'm sure I'm going to catch holy hell again this time. Anyway, give the limey's hell.

Keep us updated, that's a crazy story. Hope it works out for you but I doubt that they will take any blame for it.

Wow! I feel for ya GM as no-one deserves to be treated that poorly over nothing. I had similiar dramas getting in to the states (from Australia) a couple of years back when they interviewed me etc. over not having the updated version of a student I-20 visa. Threatened to send me back if they couldn't get in contact with school officials. Luckily for me it wasn't a weekend. Most of the customs and immigration officials I've had to deal with in the past are absolute dicks! GL with your luggage and any course of action you decide to pursue mate!

damn GM............that sucks!!!

I have been in the same situation as you going into England.....ok umm not exactly the same as you your situation was insane...........as some know I have travelled for tennis......well I remember fondly trying to explain my "job" to UK customs......was a bad ordeal.......but no...I wasn't deported! Bottom line...I learned ya have to lie.........and carry around lots of cash.....it got so insane when I went to the UK that I borrowed money just so I could bring it with me (showed them wads of cash then they are happy)....then as soon as I "got in" I'd return the money I borrowed. Just so stupid.

Then I realized.....just lie and say your there on vacation...show em a hotel reservation and your done in one minute......tell them the truth...and look what happens to ya!

Also kind of funny that they expect you to show them how much cash you have.....I mean I'd be more suspecious of some guy arriving with 50 grand in a suitcase!!

And don't get me started on the US customs and me going to the school in the US.........what a mess that was......of course if I told US customs that I was going over the border to shop...I'd be done in 5 seconds.....mention I was going to school there.....take me an hour (even though I had all legal papers...sheesh!)

So....when ya travel....just lie....sad lesson....but I learned the truth gets ya screwed.....and in your case....did ya ever get screwd!!!

Two words.....Toronto Star

Sorry to hear about your problems GM - we usually let all sorts in to stay without any questions, so stopping a Canadian seems very odd.

I guess not having contact details for your mate in the UK will have not helped, nor will the lack of a work visa etc - but some of the other stuff seems pretty inexcusable..

Hope you'll give us another chance someday
