The Vikings could be without Pro Bowl running back Adrian Peterson on Sunday.

Peterson was limited in Friday's practice because of a hamstring injury and is listed as questionable on the injury report for the game against Carolina. The questionable designation means there is a 50-50 chance Peterson will play.

"It's probably going to be a game-time type of decision," coach Brad Childress said. "He'll get treated here for the next 48 hours and then we'll look at him before the game."

Peterson, who leads the NFL in rushing with 263 yards in two games, began to feel tightness in his hamstring late in last Sunday's loss against Indianapolis. He was limited in practice Wednesday and did not take part in Thursday's session.

Even if Peterson does play, veteran Chester Taylor figures to get far more rushing attempts than the 4.5 carries he has averaged in the first two games. "I'm not excited that he's hurt," said Taylor, who rushed for 1,216 yards in 2006. "[But] it's always a good feeling to go out there and play as much as I can to help my team win. Whatever they want me to do, I'm going to go out there and do it."

Childress said the Vikings "don't lose a step" with Taylor. Childress clearly isn't going to risk losing his superstar for the long term because of a significant hamstring pull.

"Obviously, you don't want to make it a chronic thing," Childress said. "That's where the evaluation comes in. You listen to the player. Sometimes you have to protect the player from himself and err on the side of caution and sometimes you feel good about what you're seeing and that he could go."

Peterson, who did not speak to reporters Friday before heading to the trainer's room, likely will do some work on the field Sunday morning before a decision is made.

Last season, Peterson finished second in the NFL with 1,341 yards rushing on 238 carries but missed two games because of a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.

He dropped to the seventh pick of the 2007 draft because of concerns about his ability to stay healthy. Peterson played only one complete season during his three years at Oklahoma and missed time because of ankle, shoulder and collarbone injuries.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that while the Vikings will wait until after pre-game warm-ups before making a final decision, they are hoping and expecting that running back Adrian Peterson will play.

Schefter reports that wide receiver Sidney Rice, who sprained his right posterior cruciate ligament last weekend against the Colts, is out. But wide receiver Bernard Berrian, who has been hampered by a toe injury, will play.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was active on Sunday for Minnesota's game against the Carolina Panthers even though he missed significant practice time last week with a hamstring injury.

ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert writes about all things NFC North in his division blog.

Coach Brad Childress had said the NFL's leading rusher would be a game-time decision, and he was not among the list of inactives distributed before the game.

His presence is a huge boost for the 0-2 Vikings' struggling offense, which failed to score a touchdown in an 18-15 loss to Indianapolis last week that resulted in the benching of quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

Peterson said all along that he expected to play, but he did not practice on Thursday and was limited on Friday, which raised doubts about his status.

Receiver Sidney Rice (knee) was inactive for the Vikings, replaced in the starting lineup by Bobby Wade. Fullback Thomas Tapeh also was put on the shelf, replaced on the active roster and in the starting lineup by Naufahu Tahi.

For the Panthers, guard Travelle Wharton was deactivated with a knee injury. He was replaced in the starting lineup Geoff Hangartner.
