It is Iran's missile armaments that pose the greatest concern for American forces in the Gulf, especially for the US Navy. Iran's coast facing the Persian Gulf is a looming wall of mountains that look down upon any naval forces arrayed in those waters. The Gulf itself only has one exit, the Strait of Hormuz, which is also dominated by the mountainous Iranian coastline. In essence, Iran holds the high ground in the Gulf. Missile batteries arrayed in those mountains could raise bloody havoc with any fleet deployed below.

Of all the missiles in Iran's armament, the most dangerous is the Russian-made SS-N-22 Sunburn. These missiles are, simply, the fastest anti-ship weapons on the planet. The Sunburn can reach Mach 3 at high altitude. Its maximum low-altitude speed is Mach 2.2, some three times faster than the American-made Harpoon. The Sunburn takes two short minutes to cover its full range. The missile's manufacturers state that one or two missiles could cripple a destroyer, and five missiles could sink a 20,000 ton ship. The Sunburn is also superior to the Exocet missile. Recall that it was two Exocets that ripped the USS Stark to shreds in 1987, killing 37 sailors. The Stark could not see them to stop them.

The US aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt is currently deployed in the Persian Gulf, with some 7,000 souls aboard. Sailing with the Roosevelt is the Tarawa Expeditionary Strike Force, which includes the USS Tarawa, the USS Austin, and the USS Pearl Harbor. The USS Austin is likewise deployed in the Gulf. The Sunburn missile, with its incredible speed and ability to avoid radar detection, would do terrible damage these ships if Iran chooses to retaliate in the Gulf after an American attack within its borders.

Spy,

If you know of this then you can bet the US Navy does too. I'm pretty confident that IF any conflict did happen with Iran, they wouldn't be much of a match with the US Armed Forces.
I'd still be pretty shocked if we attacked Iran anytime soon. I'm still of the belief that most of this saber rattling is simply oil PRICE manipulation rhetoric.

I'am not saying the US wouldn't win, but at what cost? Maybe a few thousand men. The US has not faced anything such as cruise missiles, we are the ones who always used them on other people, what would the reaction be of the American people to find out the US Navy lost 10,000 sailors in a day. Bush wouldn't care, he has built his career on the bodies of Americans. Plus this will help his family's oil dealings when oil hits $150.00. Even now without going to war, just talking about it keeps the price high. Look at the gas pump gas is about $3.00 an gal. Wait until memorial day, this is the last one with Bush and Cheney in office, i bet it's $3.50+ an gal.

Spy, I think that's pretty much the extent of it.
What surprises me the most is that YOU, of all people, are falling for that crap.

It's a 30,000-pound weapon, designed to strike targets too deep or too hard for the biggest bunker-buster America's got, the 5,000-pound BLU-113. It can go through some 22 feet of concrete or over 100 feet of earth. MOP will go a lot deeper - 200 feet of 5,000 psi concrete.

MOP pulls it off by not being all that explosive - less than 20% by weight, compared to almost 90% for the MOAB. That?s because bunker-busting bombs need very thick casings to survive the effects of impact.

There has also been some work on adding heavy-metal ballast to increase the density of penetrating bombs ('monlithic ballasted penetrators'), which has led to unverified claims that they incorporate depleted uranium. Tungsten would be an equally good ballast material.

The type was not stated, but it?s possible that it?s a thermobaric mixture like that used in the BLU-118 "cave buster." This type of explosive produces a sustained blast which travels much more effectively through underground complexes, as the blast reportedly ?flows? around corners. To say that over two and a half tons of it would do a tremendous amount of damage in a confined space is something of an understatement.
...............................................................

Iran would probably not have a chance to even fire one of these sunburners.

Its called pre emptive strikes.

One thing about Americans Spy, we are not
stupid.

Not Stupid eh ???????

Not Stupid eh ???????

Well definately not all Americans but those in power sure are....................whats happening now was forecast as early as 1991 by all involved as to why we shouldn't go to Baghdad and repeated by Generals in front of Congress before the war....Gen Shinseki being one of the prime spokesman for the impending disaster we wd face if the Neo Cons got their way.
Sadaam oufoxed our morons being prepared for a long war...long enough so that we will never win. Ask the Brits before they partitioned the area back in the early 1900's. Iran not a worthy adversary?????

...give me a break..they fought Sadaam to a draw for 10 years with all of our aid and backing. And the day we invaded Iraq Iran marched in 15,000 fighters that to this day are outfoxing every thing we do.
Rethink that one Scotty and qualify it by "some" Americans are dummer N' Dawg Sh*t.

One more thing.........

One more thing.........

This "Sunburn" reality was discussed here earlier and The Admiral of the Pacific Fleet told our "Moron" president with a small "p" to shove it up his colon when he was asked to deploy to the Gulf.....reason being he wd not put his Navy in to be sliced up by the Sunburn which we have no defense for. "Not on his watch" was his reply.......the Moron stuck his little wiener back in his pants and backed off.

No more Kimmels in the age of the Internet!

(Kimmel was the guy they kept the intercepted Japanese codes from, thereby ensuring the success of the attack on Peal Harbor, which FDR and his cabal planned to use to get us into WWII, even though 90% of the public was against entry.)

You might consider the ease in which syria's nuke facility was taken out recently--As well as Saddam's Nuke facility previously--They were clueless till after the fact and still aren't sure who actually took them out :)

You think Iran hasn't considered the fact the same shit could happen to them.

IF-we wanted--we and Isreal could take out much of their defence before they realized what was going on.

Then you would have the Chihuahua factor to consider.

Thats those that yap-yap-yap till they get busted in the beak--then chances are they go in coverup mode rather than fighting mode.
