I got a ticket on Monday for doing a U-turn of all things, I told the cop there was no sign that said you couldn't do a U-turn, and he told me it's assumed you can't do one, and there will be a sign there saying you can do one, which seems backwards to me, and he said you can't do one within 100 ft of an intersection, which again doesn't make sense, b/c where else do you do a U-turn?

I looked in the Rules of the Road and it says you can do a U-Turn anywhere except a hilll or a curve, which I was not on, and it says some Muni's may prohibit U-turns, I called the Chicago Police Dept and asked the lady at the front desk and she said it had to be marked.

Does anyone know in Chicago if it is illegal to do a U-turn within a 100ft of an intersection? I am debating if I should fight this and go to court, or pay the $105 and take the traffic safety thing on line? Any thoughts.

I was downtown chicago when I got the ticket.

If you have the time, I would fight it. I don't know IL laws, but it sounds like everyone is agreeing with you.

I have read that you can U-turn if:
1. It is not otherwise designated, or
2. You do not impede traffic

Pay the $100 and save the time. Someone's got to pay for the beautiful lakefront and these "revenue sources" like parking tickets and traffic violations are the only way it gets done.

I live in Loves Park (near Rockford), to get out of my subdivision to head south I have to make a U-turn, and have done so multiple times in front of cops. IMO you should fight if you have the time.
That's my 2 cents. Good Luck

My brother is CPD. He said he didn't think you could, esp downtown. He is on a gang unit and the last thing on his mind is traffic laws.

Personally, if you think about it, the worst place to u-turn would be within 100 feet of an intersection, especially downtown. Those psycho cabbies would be rolling over people by the minute. There would be chaos on Michigan Ave.

You can always make more money, you can never get back lost time. You don't want to be milling about in court over a stupid ticket (unless you have time to kill or your writing a book).

Tricky Dick has to pay for those planters and that stupid park he wants along the lake with his name on it.:thefinger
