Can't recall if it is the CBI or CIT, or perhaps both, but at least one charges teams to be in the tournament. Many small schools with strapped athletic departments take a pass on that.

Looks like that's exactly the case,both charge the schools who host a game with no travel expense either. Collective vote/talk with players,coaches and administration decided the season would be over if they didn't get an NIT invite.
