lookers or lurkers?

j edgar hoover wants a full list.

no, seriously, you mean different lookers, plain hits, what does it mean?

it is a tribute to you guys, just think of all the possibilities of those "lookers".

1. regular people like you and i. no, i take it back, we are not regular people. anyway, normal people who don't wish to engage into some encounter with some of the glue-sniffing kids who post here.

2. the competition.

3. vegas insiders/oddsmakers???

4. fbi???

5. irs???

6. ????

7. ????

the bigger the names, the bigger the tribute to mj's webpage. take it as a compliment.

I think I am in a good position to answer this question for you I.E

Firstly this is my first year placing wagers on the Baseball over the last two years I have dabbled at the NBA and NFL for break even results at best. The only sport I seemed to be having any success at was Aussie Rules (marginal at best).

Then I stumbled acrooss madjacks looking for an edge to beat the man in any sport.I started to post aussie rules selections that i place small wagers on each weekend in the off the wall forum (once again were I am slightly above break even).

when it comes to baseball i am a lurker trying to gain knowledge from all the people who have had years of experience.to be honest i am only just learning all the rules of the game etc

the forumns are a great help and the resources are just sensational especially since when i am at work i have to place my bets 12 hours before game time and i can still find alot of information to help me make my decision each day.

The only thing (from my own greedy point of view) is that the earlier people can post their stats/selections or news the better.

As for info the more the better because you would be surprised how many australians such as myself are tagging along for the ride and learning heaps along the way.
Hopefully oneday i will have enough confidence and expertise to post my own selections as i do with Aussie Rules.

my bankroll i am happy to say for baseball is easily in the positive (touch wood i hope it stays that way) and this i can honestly say is due to the madjack site and its users.

so any info great or small is a help because I am sure their is pleny of learners just like me out their.

IE and Jack, i think the info provided on the resources page is 1st rate like no other , everything u need is there, i just wanna little help from u guys on deciding which factors in handicapping a baseball game are more important to you then others, such as:
1. starting pitching{L3,days rest, pitch count)
2. bullpen
3. pitcher and batters vs opponent
4. Umpire
5. win and loss streaks

..which of these should i take into consideration at a higher value then others, its only my 2nd yr capping bases, so if this question seems a little out there please disregard and thanks..Tony

HELLO IE

NOT COMPLETELY SURE WHAT YOUR AFTER BUT MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T FIX IT. I THINK WE SHOULD LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE. THE SITE IS AWESOME AND WHEN YOU START TO MAKE CHANGES WATCH OUT. I KNOW I'M ON THE OTHER END AND DONT EXACTLY SEE EVERYTHING YOU SEE SO I'M A LITTLE IGNORANT IN THAT AREA.
IE YOU ARE THE INFORMATION KING SO HOW IN THE HELL ARE YOU YOU GOING TO IMPROVE ON PERFECTION. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE STUFF YOU COME UP WITH.
ALONG WITH NOLAN YOU GUYS ARE MY HEROES AND THATS WHY I WILL BE A LIFER AT MADJACKS SPORTS. WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE FAMILY HERE, AND PERSONALLY I DON'T CARE ABOUT LOOKERS AND LURKERS.

IE, Have great respect for you, nolan, swami and others here but I too, not real sure where your going here. I used to be a pure lurker until Nolan's side splitting episode involving his famous Under Call in last years NFL playoff's. I signed up as a member the next day. I posted a few threads here and there about tips on how to win with teasers. ( I did real well last year betting 70% teasers in football) But never really felt I had much to offer in terms of noteworthy or "hot off the press" information. Thus I have since become a lurker again, albeit now, a MEMBER lurker.

If that is wrong, so be it. Take my membership. At least I don't clog up the threads with mindless proclaimations and giberish.

And if I missed your point, I'm sorry.

my 2 cents
first of all I like the free picks section, I check it out almost daily. also other sections less often but do find them valuable resourses, links (less often), scoreboards.

I like the recap Tiger puts up of the capper, that way I can see the cappers that do well on a consistent basis and read what their thoughts on the days games.

what I would like to see more of is articles on Money management (a reason I am a small time player is I think I should be better at that). There use to be a forum on Money management but was deleted because of lack of posts.

would also like to see some cappers (members) write about how they cap. these could be a series of articles done by different members. for instance what do you look for when looking at baseball totals, and how much importance is put on starting pitching, bullpen, the ballpark, could go on and on.

also could look at all the other sports, for instance what do you look at for hockey totals. is it better to bet against or on a streak, how to use trends. you could use a separate forum just for this. would be a good source of information.

I hope you would get some people to write the occasional article or else the forum would just die. basically a forum on learning how to handicap different sports, and money management. that would be the best.

enough blabbering
thanks

if those who posted their selections from a formal 'card' that listed every game, and time, and spread, and # of units risked/to gain, and the computer automatically calculated the results and showed running totals of the specifics regarding that persons success or lack thereof as the season progresses(including details so we could isolate streaks&patterns&consistency), in $ W/L and actual W/L record; those of us learning could much more easily identify those we'd prefer to learn from, more readily. I've been tracking diligently up to 35 cappers here for it seems almost a year, and although I've learned alot, I feel I'm no where near tapping into the heart of what's available thx

I don't know if I can offer any suggestions for yours and Jack's resource page, as it is already THE finest collection of links and info assembled in one place I've yet found.

So the only suggestion I can offer for improving the already great info here at Mad Jack's is to echo what selkirk said a couple of posts above.

It would be wonderful if we had a "How To" forum. Nolan had mentioned in one of his articles how very, very few books and publications there are in the gambling literature that deal with the "how to" aspects of handicapping.

Member's posts would not necessarily need to give a comprehensive and long explanation of their methodolgy (although it could be strongly encouraged)if they didn't feel up to it, but it would be nice to at least see posts of what stats, situations and trends they've found to be most higly correlated with making a successful pick.

Trends and systems players could also be encouraged to post. However, as you know, a good portion of "veterans" who have developed successful systems after years of research and work are reluctant to give away in a post or two what took them so long to develop. Still, there are some who enjoy freely sharing their discoveries.

However, in order to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, I would also like to see, as selkirk suggested, a guest column every now and then on the process that the more successful and well-known posters here at Mad Jack's use.

Unfortunately, for some members, writing is just not their thing, and they might not therefore want to participate. However, you may get a volunteer to serve as "ghost writer" or editor to assist in getting the article out.

If several of these articles were published over the course of a season, Jack could perhaps archive the one's that seemed to spark the most interest. Who knows? We might find that through the free exchange of ideas and information, a synergism of sorts could result. That is, we might begin to be able to pull the best parts of the best methodologies out to form new and stronger methods.

Whether this idea works for you and Jack or not, I'm sure whatever you decide on for improvements will be top-notch. It's great to see that you guys are willing to take the effort to make what already is the best site of it's type out on the web even better. We members appreciate it.

this is the best forum i have ever used--easiest to use and has the most information plus the best handicappers in the message forum. I am a fotball totals bettor so maybe would like to see nfl/college totals broken out from nfl/college side selections? keep up the great work!

i exchanged this early with MJ. thought i should post it here.

i think the comment about the lurkers is what is confusing everyone.

one thing that may be very useful is an area that provides info on the days hottest action.
not a forum, but just a link that provides some info about what to be watching or playing anywhere in the world.

example:
quite often i forget or don't know about a tennis match final that would be worth a look. or the Ausie football stuff. or the WNBA games. or sports i didn't even know existed.

there is a lot of good action out there if one knows where to look. and it isn't always in the sport we might be paying too much attention to.

and with the help of other Madjackers that know more about it ... could be worth $$

how would this improve www.madjacksports.com ?
well, i think it would generate more interest in more forums more often.
it might get some knowledgeable lurkers posting.
it would create more traffic for you. especially if there becomes interest in games in Europe, Japan and Australia. because of the time zone differences.

kinda like a page that consolidates what games are playable from around the world for that day. a synopsis of what is being talked about in all the forums that would generate more interest and more reasons to visit forums that we don't often visit.

This is not exactly what you were looking for, but i have a question.

I guess i am considered a lurker. I check these posts contsantly, but if i post it's usually only to ask a question or praise a capper.
(and on that note, thanks to Rander and JT for putting up with my questions, and giving solid answers)

This is my first year every betting baseball, and when football starts, it will be my first year with that as well. I don't post much cause i honestly don't think i have anything to bring to the table. I would love to do something though. So my questions is what can i do to help MJ? What do you guys want?
smile.gif

On another note, while you are putting together that posts on money management, i would love to put some thoughts in on what NOT to do. I think a bad example can be helpful as a good one. I'd love to share my thoughts.

Sorry for the long post. GLA

IE,

LY, in college bb, I read a post where someone had reported they had first hand knowledge that 3 members of a team (I think it was St. John's) had showed up hours early for practice and were in a full sweat when the coach arrived.

The coach was very impressed with this kind of initiative and the team went on to have a very productive practice.

The team was nearly a double digit dog at game time.

They won the game outright.

Is there a link where we can get practice reports on NCAAbb/fb?

First off great job as this by far is a great forum....

I think you should break all of your sports into two forums like you have done for football.

For example if you had the normal bases forum you could add another forum just for comments rants and raves about games in progress or general. There have been many of time where I would like to complain about a game in progress but am reluctant to do so, because I do not want to bury great information.

I also have been on the other side of this and had to bump great info to the top to save it from being lost. I believe another forum like this would be welcome as posters could comment on current no hitters, great plays, and/or complain about a team. yyz could fill the forum up with brewer complaints all by himself

On the course!
DOWN GOES YYZ!!!! DOWN GOES YYZ!!!!

Silly Sneaks!

This place has grown too big, IMHO. If you visit other sites, you see the same page up for a week. Here, a page goes by in hours! Amazing. That, in itself, is not the problem. The problem is, (and I am as guilty as anyone) there is too much posting of plays, and not enough information.

Due to this fact, I don't read most of the posts, and it is hard to seperate the "wheat from the chaff."

Football season is easier to navigate, as there are far fewer games, and they are not played every day. But baseball? WHOA! It is quite easy to see that the vast majority of posters only wish to see their records improve. This is something that the forum moderators cannot control, thus, it will continue.

People get reputations.....I will open up a proven winners thread before I open a 'newbies' thread. I will read a thread with 'info' and hold it in a higher regard than just a "Yankees BIG tonight!" post.

All in all, I like Jack's place, and will continue to enjoy reading what I can, and contributing when possible.

Dear Friends:

After reading the comments above, I have to get involved in this thread because I think many of you have touched on a key issue here.

"thisisit" asked the key question, when requested of IE and others:

"WHAT DO YOU GUYS WANT?"

Let me try to answer this as best I can:

I think we all try to provide what we can, to the best of our abilities. Some put a lot of hours into this forum, and others put in just a few minutes each day. Still others just come and read and do not contribute. We fully understand that everyone's schedule is different and NO ONE can be expected to pull equal shares with everyone else. That's jsut the way things go.

But here is what *I* ask of all of you out there who lurk, or may think that what you have as far as information is not worthy of contributing.

EACH OF YOU OUT THERE HAS SPECIAL INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR LOCAL TEAMS AND CITIES THAT THE REST OF US DO NOT KNOW.

Please go back and read that again.

EACH OF YOU

HAS SPECIAL INFORMATION

ABOUT YOUR LOCAL TEAMS AND COMMUNITIES

THAT THE REST OF US DO NOW KNOW.

......so

SHARE IT WITH US!

This past year, you would not believe the kinds of e-mail I received. I swear I could write a book. I had a bartender in South Florida e-mail me in February that he saw some NBA team out partying their azzes off the night before a game in Miami last year. That information was like GOLD. I had late weather reports from games where there was snow and rain. I had e-mail from people telling me that a team plane got in 8 hours late and the team was fatigued. I had e-amil from people who said the field was terrible condition. I've heard from punters overseas who keyed me into a good game in Austrailian Rules Football. THATS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG!

THAT'S THE KIND OF MATERIAL WE NEED MORE OF ON THIS FORUM -- not just the major contributoirs who are always willing to share the time, but the guy out there who follows his local team religiously and knows more about a game than 98 percent of the rest of us.

There is just no way I can keep up with hundreds of teams and dozens of sports all at the same time. YOU HAVE TO RELY ON OTHERS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION, sometimes.

So, what I am asking is that when games come up and YOU HAVE INFORMATION, don't just assume the rest of us already know everything. We do not live in MINNESOTA (for example) and know what's happeing with the TWOLVES this week, other than what we can research on our own or see on ESPN. We do not live in Cincinnati and know that a tractor ran over the field, plowed it over, the field froze, and the games was about the easiest UNDER in the universe. We don't kow there were 34 MPH winds in Detroit last month when the total was 9 and both teams combined for 22 runs. We don't know that a certain umpire is 4-13 in UNDERS this season. We may know SOME of this, but we don't know IT ALL!

By God, I beg of you -- on the NFL we really DO need people all across the country telling us what is happening in weather developments..if it's hot and humid, I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT! If it's 5 degrees I want to know! Last season, I touted an OVER in a late season Denver/Kansas City game. I bet $400 on the game. The "Weather Channel" on Sunday morning predicted a high in the mid-20s so I stuck on the game. Now, we all know weather forecasters are dumb as bricks. But I had NOTHING else to go on. If SOMEONE OUT THERE IN KANSAS CITY HAD TAKEN FIVE MINUTES AND POSTED A WEATHER REPORT FROM ARROWHEAD (stick your nose out the front foor for 5 seconds for Crissakes!), I would have saved that $440.

I'm not trying to be hard on people. I'm only tryuing to drive a point home.

So, please -- when you hear something, even if it's just a rumor or a thought, or even an idea -- BY ALL MEANS POST IT and SHARE IT with the rest of us!

This forum is not about perfection. Look at my page for instance -- I'm the first to admit failures and frailties. The world gets to see all of my mistakes. Big deal. Learn and move one. No one will make fun of information that is timely and posted constructively.

WE ALL BENEFIT.

WE CAN WORK TOGETHER.

THE MORE GOOD INFOMRAITON THE BETTER.

FOR EVERYONE.

I hope my point is clear.

"That" is what I ask of each of you.

-- Nolan Dalla
