Immigrants allowed to work in US legally - what do you think?

I have not studied this situation or legislation closely, but it is becoming a real hot-button issue. I'm guessing that some of you in Southern states deal with this and it is a more prevalent issue than it is up north. We don't have a lot of Canadians heading down into Minnesota to do odd jobs for low pay...

What do you guys think of this issue? I doubt it is a black and white issue that will work for everyone, but I would like to hear some points, good and bad.

I think I would be against it from a financial standpoint in some ways. Illegals getting paid in cash, sending it home, not paying taxes, using the US system to their advantage. I understand it is probably difficult to get American workers to do some of these jobs, so business owners will pay them out of necessity. I also figure some business owners to use this to avoid paying a fair wage, bennies, etc.

Obviously, I meant non-US resident citizens, illegal aliens, etc. Not immigrants...sorry about that.

I can't hire an illegal.

Would love to because they WANT to work. If they take your vehicle and something bad happens (hit another vehicle, run over someone, rob a bank, transport a crew of their friends, take off to Canada ) you are SOL.

They can't be tracked and generally don't own any property of major value.

This also could apply to lose of company equipment. How the hell are you going to find an alignment machine that costs tens of thousands of dollars when Pierre bolts back North with it, or lives in a neighborhood with a million other Pierres.

I think a system that allowed non-residents to work would be a good start to solving some of our problems. The trick would be to make the businesses pay a decent wage, so it would still be conceivable that the work is available to citizens as well. Also, another key element is to rule with an iron fist against businesses that hire or pay illegals outside of the set guidelines.

As stated in previous threads, there are some good paying jobs needing to be filled, but Americans are too lazy to fill them if they require real manual labor.

If there is a $50K per year job available to legal non-residents, they would be snatched up in a heartbeat. I think this would be a huge boon to our economy. Full taxes would need to be paid on those earnings before being sent out of the country to their families back home.

Now I have over-simplified this situation to the Nth degree, but I believe this idea could have legs with the proper brain power behind it. Good luck in finding that in Washington!

people who hire illegals to work for them are rewarding people for brealing the law....we are a nation of laws....& that should be followed by all....no exceptions...

a little off topic,but,didn`t they just raise the minimum wage somewhere out west to $7.50 or $8.00 an hour?...maybe it was connecticut...

As soon as no one from U S said no to the job fine. As long as it's at least minimum wage. And they pay there own health care. Right now you and me pay for about 9 million who are here getting free health care. That is driving up our health care cost more then any law suite does.
