Snow, snow, and more snow. But just maybe the double header in fairfield will go on.
Poughkeepsie Journal
As of Sunday night, the teams, officials and television crews were already in Bridgeport, Conn.
Question is, will anyone else be at the Arena at Harbor Yard today when the Marist College and St. Peter's men's basketball teams tip off in a President's Day matinee?
The tri-state area is supposed to get pelted with several inches of snow today. And with hazardous driving conditions expected, it will be difficult for any spectators to make the trek to the arena that sits just off the Long Island Sound coastline.
''It's probably going to affect the crowd,'' Marist coach Dave Magarity said Sunday, moments after the team arrived in Bridgeport. ''If this thing does go off, we will probably have a big TV audience.''
And that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing because that's one of the reasons the Red Foxes are playing today's game in Bridgeport, Conn. The matchup is technically a 'home' game for the Red Foxes, but the Madison Square Garden Network decided it wanted to broadcast a tripleheader from the arena.
Still, Magarity is a little miffed. Usually, he said, in order to level the playing field,
field, if one conference team decides to play another at a neutral site, the other team offers to return the favor at a neutral site, too.
>But that wasn't the case with St. Peter's. The two teams met last Thursday on the Peacocks' turf in Jersey City, N.J..
''TV is first and foremost,'' Magarity said. ''I am just a little confused about it. The only time we have done this before, we did it with Fairfield a couple of years ago. We moved our home game to the Garden and they moved theirs to the Pepsi Arena.''
No matter where today's game is played, Marist will have revenge on its mind. The Red Foxes led the Peacocks by seven at halftime and held a 15-point advantage early in the second half of their 72-68 loss.
But Marist played too fast late in the second half and allowed St. Peter's to control the game's tempo. The Red Foxes also gave up 22 offensive rebounds, which led to 16 second-chance points.
Said Marist junior forward Dennis Young: ''We've just got to come out and play well. We have to come out as a team and just dominate a team to get our confidence back right now. That's what we need to do. We've got no vendetta against them or want to get back at them. We just want to win the game. That's what we are searching for. We are not looking for a medal. We just want to win.''
St. Peter's coach Bob Leckie expects the Red Foxes to be hungry for a win.
''They should be,'' the second-year coach said. ''And if they are not, then I'll be a hell of a lot happier about it.''
He's also be happy if his star, Keydren Clark, drops 24 points on the Red Foxes again. Marist, though, hopes it can contain the freshman.
''We felt like we played really good defense and then we look at the box score and he had a lot of points,'' Marist senior guard David Bennett said . ''The other hard thing is whenever he missed a shot, it seemed like they got the offensive rebound because he draws so much attention. He's a challenge.
''Hopefully we will be ready for it and defensively bring our 'A' game. And hopefully slow him down and pull out a 'W'.''
