Indians Put Closer Wickman on DL

CLEVELAND (AP) - Cleveland Indians closer Bob Wickman went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained forearm muscle.

Wickman, who has been pitching with a sore elbow since spring training, never had been on the DL in his 10-year career.

The Indians said Wickman complained of a sore forearm after Sunday's loss in Kansas City and he was examined Monday at Lutheran Hospital.

Wickman is 0-3 with a 4.59 ERA and 20 saves in 35 appearances for Cleveland this season. He has blown two saves.

Right-hander Chad Paronto was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Wickman's roster spot. Paronto appeared in 26 games with the Indians, going 0-2 with a 4.45 ERA before being sent to the minors July 15.

With Wickman sidelined, Indians interim manager Joel Skinner probably will use Paul Shuey to close games.

The 33-year-old Wickman went 5-0 with 32 saves in 70 games for the Indians last season. The club signed him to a three-year, $15.9 million contract in December.

Wickman said in June that he had been pitching with pain in his elbow since training camp in March.

no prob....wigs...fire away!

i noticed in the same paper they had this interesting note about valdes in their game preview.....

Rangers starter Ismael Valdes (5-7): Valdes has made three consecutive quality starts (at least six innings allowing three earned runs or fewer), including his last outing against Seattle. He threw a season-high 124 pitches in that outing. The last time Valdes threw at least 110 pitches, he struggled the next time out, allowing Houston four runs in four innings.
