sorry to put another one of these threads up,but,i`m in the market for a receiver...my old N.E.C. receiver finally started going on the fritz....

it was so powerful...so heavy...i don`t even know if N.E.C. is still in business....but the sound was amazing...20 years old...i have mixed emotions...i`m wondering if everything made these days is crap compared to the older stuff...

but,i can get one with hdmi inputs to go with the hi-def t.v...so,i`m looking forward to seeing how they work together..

i`m hoping i can get something decent in the $399/$499 range....i don`t think i want to go over $500....

my sony hi-def t.v. is great...love it....but,i bought a sony receiver about 10 years ago for a smaller room and it sucks..it was fairly inexpensive back then and had lots of bells and whistles...but it sucked on ice....lousy sound ..you get what you pay for,i guess..

heard good things about denon`s and yamaha...

any help is appreciated..

well,i settled on a pioneer....model vsx-917v-k...around $359 on sale(supposedly)at best buys...grabbed a jbl surround sound system model scs500.5bk while i was there for around $339(i gotta admit,i was never sold on sub woofers...but,now i know it`s the whole ballgame as far as home theater`s concerned).......with the hi-def t.v.and dvd i bought, that`s about all the money i`m ever gonna throw at a home theater...i`m done....and all the fricking cables and cord connections aren`t exactly cheap(hdmi cables/digital optical cables, digital coax)....insane...

what a pain in the ass to set up!.....i`ve never done anything like this...the hi def t.v. and vcr were a little dicey...not to bad...but this?...

it`s been awhile since i bought a new receiver...and i`ve never been so baffled....this thing has to be routed through your t.v. because of all the "on screen" menus and prompts....and these new t.v`s have multiple inputs..so you`re trying to set it up to work in sync with the other components...

and of course, the set ups indicated in the t.v./dvd/receiver manuals are all completely different...

i couldn`t get the damned thing to work unless i had the dvd on...couldn`t get sound just watching the t.v....

took me the better part of two evenings to finally get it to work right...and i`m holding my breath that nothing goes wrong...because it`s so involved, that,if you hit the wrong button on the remote or screw up a setting accidentally,it might take you another day or two to figure out what you did...

all that said...after all that aggravation...i have to say it`s amazing...that sub woofer is crazy...

i`m not sure you could use a sub-woofer in an apartment or even a townhouse...it`s an incredible sound....it`s what really gives the set-up that "theater-like" feel.... played the "appocalypto" dvd i recorded off cable and it was incredible...

the receiver is set-up to handle the sub-woofer,a center channel,2 front,2 surround and 2 rear speakers...

the speaker set only had the center,sub-woof,2 front and two rear speakers but the wall speakers i had work fine with it...

i guess it was worth the grief...i learned quite a bit...but,to be honest,i only stumbled upon a connection that worked through a "hit and miss, hunt and peck" method...

i was seeing double when i finally got it right...

i honestly believe that an engineer would have struggled with this stuff...
