Nebraska star DL Jason Lohr is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Arkansas lost CB Marvin Jackson with a torn ACL and is out for the year.

Arkansas DT Jayson Johnson was knocked out with a separated shoulder

(*just confirmed at the official Arkansas website that he will be out for the year also. Neither player was listed as a starter. But both contributed last year and were expected to contribute even more this year. CB Jackson also might have been the punt returner)

BYU lost Ben Archibald with a broken leg.

(*he was a senior starter and he was on Phil Steele's 3rd team MWC team)

Suspensions at Virginia Tech

The Hokies suspended All-Star CB Roynell Whitaker for the Arkansas State game while WR Terrell Parham and DE Lamar Cobb
were suspended for the first two games of the season for violating team rules.

(*obviously the loss of Whitaker for that game won't affect the outcome but may help Ark St cover the current 37 pt spread; then again maybe not)

NC State Loses Star Freshman for Season

Defensive back A.J. Davis broke a bone in his left leg during a scrimmage.

Aug 15, 2002

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina State defensive back A.J. Davis will miss the season after breaking his leg in a scrimmage.

The highly touted freshman will have surgery next week and be sidelined at least two months before beginning rehabilitation, Wolfpack coach Chuck Amato said Thursday.

Davis broke the bone just above his left ankle while trying to make a tackle Wednesday night.

The Parade All-American from Northern Durham High School was being counted on to play special teams this season, while serving as a second-team cornerback.

He will be redshirted and have four years of eligibility left

(*Phil Steele's preseason mag had him listed as the top newcomer for NC St this year and said he was expected to contribute right away. If there is any more worthwile news I can find I will post it here this week. If anyone has any other injury updates feel free to add them to this thread)

Fuquay Varina, NC
NC State also lost Dovonte Edwards, WR for 3-4 weeks with a yet undetermined knee injury. We are deep at this position so hopefully this lost won't hurt too bad.

SMU
Wide receiver Chris Cunningham, who led SMU with 45 catches last season, will miss the 2002 season after X-rays revealed he broke two bones in his left foot during a scrimmage on Saturday night.

FSU
Florida State will be without backup quarterback Adrian McPherson when the Seminoles play Iowa State in Saturday's season opener.

McPherson suffered a high ankle sprain in last Wednesday's scrimmage. In seven games last season, McPherson was 18-of-37 for 198 yards and two touchdowns.

The injury leaves starter Chris Rix as the Seminoles' only game-tested quarterback. Fabian Walker will back him up.

``I'm just going to rehab and hopefully things will get better,'' McPherson said.

Florida State did learn that receivers Anquan Boldin and Craphonso Thorpe and defensive tackles Darnell Dockett and Travis Johnson would be ready for the season opener.

USC loses starting CB Arbet for season
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Southern California will be without senior cornerback Kevin Arbet for the entire season after he suffered a broken right foot.

Arbet, who would have been a starting cornerback for Pete Carroll's club, will redshirt this season and finish up his career in 2003.

Arbet had been bothered by pain in his foot throughout spring and summer ball. He finally had a bone scan taken Monday, which revealed the stress fracture.

After coming to USC as a walk-on in 1999, Arbet was given a scholarship in his freshman year. While playing in 22 games over his first two seasons, Arbet had 25 tackles and three interceptions, including one for a 70-yard TD, last year as a backup at the corner position. He was also used as a return man last season.

Florida State lineman Brown ruled ineligible
Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Florida State senior offensive guard Milford Brown was declared ineligible for the upcoming football season.

Brown, a 6-foot-4, 316-pound native of Montgomery, Alabama, was ruled ineligible to participate after the NCAA discovered he used up all his eligibility.

Last season, Brown started all 12 games at split guard including the Seminoles' Gator Bowl victory over Virginia Tech. He arrived in Tallahassee after transferring from East Mississippi Junior College prior to the beginning of the 2001 campaign.

An NCAA committee informed the university that Brown was a full-time student at Alabama State in the fall of 1997. Therefore, his five-year eligibility window had expired. Brown contended he did not take a full course load that semester.

**Phil Steele's preseason mag listed him as the top newcomer for FSU last year.

Wigs,

Thanks for posting here. Last year I posted at another site and had this thread up the tuesday after the games. That was usually when I found the most injury updates, then we would add to the thread all week. These early injuires usually don't have too much affect on the teams right away. But if teams are continued to get hit hard by injuries, especially at one position (Mich St secondary and Washington St LB's come to mind from last year), then it really helps the capping.

Vols lose DE Ritzmann for season
Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - The fifth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers will be without defensive end Constantin Ritzmann for the 2002 season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

Ritzmann tore the anterior cruciate ligament just 11 days before the start of the season. Volunteers football athletic trainer Keith Clements said Ritzmann would undergo surgery sometime in the next few weeks

"Of course, I'm disappointed," Ritzmann said. "I figured it would have been a great year. I'm just going to take a redshirt, work as hard as I can and come back next year. It felt funny when it happened. It didn't hurt, it still doesn't hurt. I wasn't sure if it was going to be an all-year thing, just two or three games. I'm disappointed, a little frustrated, but I've got to move on."

Last season, Ritzmann tied for third on the team in sacks with four and had four additional tackles for loss. He started three games in place of Will Overstreet during the middle of the year, and that experience was something the Vols were counting on heading into 2002.

Nittany Lion safety lost for season
State College, PA (Sports Network) - Penn State safety Yaacov Yisrael will be lost for the 2002 season after tearing a ligament in his left knee at practice on Wednesday.

Yisrael, who started every game last season at strong safety, was fourth on the team in tackles, but his status for this year's team was in doubt following a drunken driving incident last year.

However, Paterno had been leaning towards letting him play until the injury on Wednesday.

"That's a real setback for him, because he really has done well and had a great summer academically," Paterno said. "He has been practicing well."

Yisrael became the second Nittany Lion safety lost for the season to a torn ACL in the last week. Junior Ben Lago was injured last week in practice

**this will probably be the last injury update in this thread for this week. I will start a new one on monday or tuesday. GL to all this weekend and congrats to those who had CSU last nite.

ok just a few more...

Bowling Green has suffered a few key injuries this past week. Senior starting defensive end Will Teague is out for the season after having surgery on Wednesday to repair a severe high ankle injury. Sophomore nose tackle Andy Grubb, who is backing up senior D.J. Owchar, broke a bone in his foot that will sideline him for at least three or four weeks. Junior starting tight end Craig Jarrett tore a ligament in his knee and could possibly be out for the season.

Ball State took a hit to its safety position as senior Jade Winchell has left the team due to injury, and fellow senior Charlie Avant will be out for 3-to-4 weeks. Winchell, who has started 25 games over the past three seasons, was forced to give up football because of lingering problems resulting from a concussion. Avant had surgery last week after suffering a broken jaw during practice. These injuries will propel either junior Doug Owusu or redshirt freshman David Gater into the starting role.

UNLV all-conference junior linebacker Ryan Claridge is rehabbing a hernia problem that resulted from a lower abdominal strain and is likely to miss the first four games of the season. In Claridge?s absence, junior Derek Olsen, and sophomore Zach Bell and Terrence Young are expected to compete for the starting role.

Nevada senior wide receiver Jermaine Brown has left the team after having problems recovering from last year?s ACL injury. Brown, who tore the ACL in his right knee during the Wolf Pack?s sixth game at Rice, was still feeing much pain in his knee and didn?t think he?d be healthy enough to contribute this season. ? Sophomore starting offensive tackle Harvey Dahl, who had surgery to repair a tendon in his left foot, developed an infection and had to have another surgery last weekend. He is expected to miss the Wolf Pack?s opener on Aug. 31 against Washington State.

Boise State starting senior place-kicker Nick Calaycay will be out 4-to-6 weeks after suffering a partial tear of his MCL in his right knee. Calaycay hurt his knee after being hit by a teammate on a field-goal attempt in last week?s scrimmage. He will be replaced by sophomore Tyler Jones, who does not have an attempt at the collegiate level.

Duke lost another key member of its football team as starting junior tight end Nick Brzezinski tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee during Wednesday?s scrimmage and is out for the year. Brzezinski, who caught three TD?s while backing up first-team all-conference end Mike Hart last season, was to play a major role in the Blue Devils? offense, and will be replaced by sophomore Calen Powell and redshirt freshman Andy Roland.
