Injuries go from bad to worse for Monarchs, as tailback Ray Lawry could be lost for season

The injury news keeps getting worse for the Old Dominion offense.
Less than a week after losing their top receiver, Jonathan Duhart, for the season, the Monarchs may also have lost their top running back, Ray Lawry, for the rest of 2017, coach Bobby Wilder said.

Lawry, a pre-season All-Conference USA pick who has rushed for more than 1,000 yards each of the last two seasons, has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury. Wilder said after ODU's loss to North Carolina that an MRI revealed that Lawry's hamstring is torn.
"It could potentially be a season-ending injury for him," Wilder said.
Lawry tried to play last week at UMass but was a late scratch. He had not been at practice this week. He was injured in the first quarter of ODU's season-opening win over Albany.
"He?s tried to work through it just wasn't getting better," he said.
Like Duhart, a senior who broke his foot against UMass, Lawry could apply for a medical redshirt that would give him a fifth season, Wilder said.
He and Duhart were 2 of 4 offensive starters out Saturday. Tight end Melvin Vaughan and right tackle Chad Hendricks, who each have knee injuries, could return for the C-USA opener vs. Florida Atlantic Oct. 7, Wilder said.
Free safety Rob Thompson also missed Saturday's game, with a groin injury, and could return for the game at Virginia Tech Saturday, Wilder said.
