there are 2 kinds of insurance that more than likely apply to Barbaro's plight.
1/A mortality policy paying on a horses death or inability to earn or Sire. In this case. probably 25 Million.
2/A surgical policy probably paid for his leg surgery.
Vets say he has a 50/50 chance of survival and next to no chance
of Siring a foal as the rear legs have to be strong enough to complete the effort
The 25M figure is derived from his Derby win. Had he won the Preakness, his value may have been 40M.
FYI, the annual Premium on a Mortality combo, ballparks 4-5% of the animal's value, so if the same injury happens to a cheap plater, say $25-50K, a tax write off is the route to go.
Also read that Barbaro's owners opted not to euthanize him for Sentimental feelings. Don't know if this affects the Insurance payout
