Domain Registry of America seems to have pioneered this marketing "tactic" in the internet domain name registration field (technically not fraud).

If you have one or more domain names registered do not be surprised if you get a "renewal notice" from a company you have never heard of.

These fake renewal notices sometimes come with payment coupons that look very legitimate.

If you know where to look on the renewal notices however, there is a statement that by sending payment to them you are authorizing the new company to take over the "registration" of your domain name.

In short, these companies are sending the fake renewal notices to people who are not customers hoping that they will not realize and become a client by sending payment and authorizing the transfer of their domains.

One of our customers who mistakenly paid and thereby allowed his domain to be transferred to Domain Registry of America ended up with his web site being down for 5 days before we could get the domain registration straightened out.

Make sure you know whom you are dealing with!!!

Note:
withdomain registrations at:
http://www.atMOTIONdomains.com
and with a number of other registrars you can now ?lock? your domain names so that your website is not disrupted by this type of mistake; however, you are still going to be out money if you send it to someone with whom you are not a client.
