If you get a message purportedly from the FDIC telling you that one of your bank accounts is going to lose its FDIC insurance because of a possible violation of the USA Patriot Act, ignore it.

It's a scam that is trying to get you to enter your personal financial data on a malicious web page that looks like a legitimate site. This is called "phishing".

This particular scam is well-done because it also uses the Internet Explorer flaw to spoof the URL. The fake site looks like -- and even has the same web address as -- an official FDIC site.

gw....

believe it or not, many do. i remember years ago being on aol (ssshhhhh) and someone trying to phish my cc in an IM. i replied back by asking if they ever got any cc's? the guy, for what he was (a criminal), was straightforward with me, and said he got 10-20 a day, and I think that was just by using bots to go in and out of chat rooms at a rapid rate, take the list, and mass IM, so yes, there are people that will unwillingly give info out.....got the ebay scam a while back, and left the fields blank, and clicked on "OK" and it took me right back to the ebay homepage....scary though because many of the emailed phishes are very well done. identity theft is a huge threat, and it's not just by people going through your garbage now, actually, i'd be willing to bet that 80+% occurs via the internet

thought i'd share
