Have an interview at work this week for a promotion and I am a serious underdog to get the job. Any idea what I should take besides a resume? Boss said I will need to impress him! Haven't been to an interview in 15 years or more and am a little rusty. Like I said there is another candidate who looks like a lock for the job. Actually there are 2 others interviewing, but I'm not worried about the third one.

Order a Sam Adams at lunch...it works in the commerical. :)

I have never faced an "in-job" interview. My only advice would be the typical interview advice: read all you can about the company history, company policies, and company culture. Become a "company man" with a vision of where you want to be within the company in 5-10 years.

Good Luck.

Let us know how it turns out.

Numbers.

Bring in numbers, actual real numbers of what you have helped the comapny accomplish.

Did you reduce errors in the work day?
Did you speed up certain procedures?
What have you done to limit the need for overtime?
Have you increased revenue?
Have you advertised the company more? Made it more appealable to the masses?
Brought in new customers?

i dont know what you do so its kinda hard to guess here.

walk in.

sit down in his chair

kick your feet up on his desk

Tell him: "If you give me this promotion I won't sh*t on your wife's chest after I f*ck her anymore"

Penguinfan,

Marine brought up some good points, your main focus should be trying to convince the interviewer that you are an accomplished individual. You have to prove to them that you are good at what you do and that you would be a positive benefit to their company.
You pretty much have to sell yourself!

Good Luck

Marine has good advise. You did say boss said you must impress him. This sounds like you work for him already and he knows much about you. So some facts he will already have in hand.
If this is case. A short reminder of what are keys things you have brought forward should be done. If you are a person that does not take sick days. Remind him of this. It shows stable and interest in your work. Get to the future as soon as you can with a plan on how you will take this new job to a higher level. He knows your old history. Now show him the new history you wish to achieve.

Dear Penguinfan:

Above all be honest. This guy knows you anyway and is probably interviewing you to determine if you can handle the new position.

I think if you do the foregoing, you will be on that fryer monday morning getting congrats from your ex-mates on the soda crew.

Beer and broads may work for some but on the other hand.

First impression is always the best. LOOK CONFIDENT. Never look away from him, always look him in the eyes when talking. Proper posture in the chair. Don't move around to much. I know this sounds funny but it actually does make a difference. The way you express yourself leaves a lasting impression.

Don't wait for him to ask you questions. Start out by saying what your goals are for the company where you can make improvements and why it would benefit the company for you to get the job. Don't make it sound like money is the main goal here. But always sound like you know what you are talking about.

Gl luck!

I am working on finalizing the resume package I am gonna give him at the interview and going over in my head the things you guys brought up. Dr Strangelove, thanks for the remider about selling myself, great point there. Djv, another good point there because I have never taken a sick day or called off once in 15 years so I will remind him of that and neverteaseit thanks for the reminders on the interview basics there. I still think I am about a +2.20 dog to get the job, but gotta give it a shot. Haskell, what can I say but you continue to impress me, if only there were a way we could use your powers for good instead of evil.......
