I went to Culver hawkeye Wednesday night and watched in horror as my play on Iowa -10 (vs. Minn) went down in flames. It was the first triple-OT game ever at that venue. As I sat there -- wishing I had sneaked a pint in -- I thought to myself, I said, "Self, how the fuk did this team beat Illinois?"
Not very impressive group of starters Alford has out there. They started the game with intensity and went up 11 early. But they could not shoot the rock, folks. Their guards couldn't hit from outside (1 for 20 from 3) and lost their confidence quickly.
By the end of the the second OT it was comical. Neither team wanted to step up and win. Even the cheerleaders were exhausted. Much to my disappointment they ceased to perform. The band ran out of songs, and eventually the gophers ran out of hope.
One of their big guys, Greg Brunner snatched rebounds effectively in the first half (remember they are playing the gophers who had even less confidence; none of the gophers even wanted to dribble the basketball). Brunner was brutal under the basket on offense and had no fake moves, he would just put it up wildly and was often rejected.
So I circled this game for Saturday thinking if the line comes out less than 8 I am going to TITFD on the spartans. Mich. St. a bit overrated as well I believe, but they handled Indiana in their last home game by 14 and come off the win at Ohio St. -- a very good squad.
So I see teams headed in opposite directions if you will pardon the cliche.
MSU -7.5 for the cornish game hen!
