we see how a supposedly good iowa defense has trouble vs a fast, superior passing offense.....i see a correlation in the miami-ohio st game....the big ten is not used to seeing these quick, superior passing attacks .....the usc speed and diversified offense has worn down iowa.....and a fairly mediocre running game is riddling the iowa "d"....the line is also moving similarly toward ohio st.......could be another ugly game....clarett will have to dominate for ohio st to have a chance....it is generally understood that iowa has a more potent offense than ohio st....i just have trouble seeing the ohio st "d" containing an attack like this on a neutral field....would like to see usc-miami...

So Cal
GW - wish I had read your thread before posting. Your comparison is very valid. Only difference is that the USC defense is overall more sound than Miami. But, Miami will have more quickness than Buckeyes have seen this year. I think it plays out the same way.

Gardenweasel,

Interesting point and definitely something to consider. . .

However, what about Ohio State's performance against Washington State. . . very good offensive attack and they basically shut them down except for the first drive of the game.

I'm beginning to question my play on Ohio State as well because I am just not sure, but it is unfair to compare Ohio State with Iowa even though they have played similar competition.

I think a huge part of OSU's win over Wash. St. was their shutting down the Cougar running game. WSU ended up with only 17 rushing yards for the game, and actually had minus yardage in the 2H. WSU doesn't have a very strong running game to begin with, averaging less than 4 yards per rush, and only 129 rushing per game.

The Miami Hurricanes, on the other hand, have All-American Willis MacGahee. Miami averages a stout 5.4 YPR (which is actually one yard better Ohio St.'s average of 4.4), and 191 per game. If the Hurricanes have their running game going, to set up the pass, then watch out!

I think it's safe to say that tonite USC completely dominated Iowa at the line of scrimmage. Give Pete Carroll and Norm Chow credit. They wore down the Iowa defense starting late in the 1H by keeping the offense rather conservative and running the ball. That kept the game close in the 1H, but then came the big holes and long runs in the 2H. Carson Palmer didn't have to carry the load on his shoulders. Absolute genius by the USC coaching staff!

all good points

all good points

i think it is a valid comparison...but,there are variables in this game....

ohio st`s pass "d" is a good deal better than iowa`s(although they still give up 238 ypg )....and

miami`s rushing defense which plays into ohio st`s strength...i would expect miami to force ohio st to pass by stacking the box....

miami`s balance on offense and obvious speed advantage...

miami `s offense has been stifled in parts of games this year....but they are pretty much a sure thing to get at least 24 points(minimum)....

ohio st played several solid defenses this year but didn`t put up many points against them(michigan, purdue and penn st)

to me it comes down to:
can ohio st pound clarett and control the clock without a prolific passing game to loosen things up?

will miami`s offense be to fast and balanced...

i expect it to be fairly close early and maybe throughout the first half(ala usc-iowa)....but i suspect there will be the inevitable big plays from miami....

may check the 1st qtr and 1st half lines looking for an edge....ohio st is the big underdog and they should come out with adrenaline flowing(as most substantial dogs have done in the bowls-az st....n mexico...lsu....n texas...even wash st hung in until the stupid coaching decisions and special teams plays)....

honestly,i like several of the playoff games much better....g.l.
