I hate to sound like a harpy, but I've had a couple of cocktails and blown off the news for 48hrs and the first thing I hear is Al-Sadr has given the Iraqi Parliament, by whom he's been ignored, an ultimatum for peace.
Somehow, after all this surgin', we seem to have forgotten about the one freakin' guy who can make the whole Middle East politics chapter in 43's biography look strangely similar to Iran circa 1979.
There are no arguments that make sense why this guy has been ignored. No track record as a terrorist vs the US. He was not a Baathist. His dealings with Iran are not exactly revelations, considering he probably has a 250K-sized army. We didn't give him all the weapons. The former Baath party didn't give him all the weapons. Al-Qaeda didn't give him all the weapons. Yet, here we are..........beholden to some Muslim cleric with more juice than 1000 puppet PMs.
We are not more secure for our incursion. We have done more for Iran politically in that region than they could possibly have done for themselves with a single dirty bomb. We cannot afford to waste our resources any longer trying to prop up a populace that does not want to help themselves. Even if you sell me on the concept that the intentions were noble, the simple fact is that they will NEVER be capable of republican rule. They are not inclined. If they wanted it that much, they would have shown us their will by now. Do we not appreciate the irony of forcing democratic philosophy on the unwilling? Each day we force the issue smacks of "empire," not "benevolence."
I'm going to bed, but I've been talking about this Al-Sadr mess for a year, and I hate to say i told you so.............
