Yes, you read that correctly. The Iraqi parliament - who our brave young men and women are fighting to protect and preserve - is planning on taking a two month vacation during the months of July and August. This is wrong on so many levels. Exactly what are we fighting for again? This doesn't seem like a government committed to getting things done, despite our huge investment and sacrifice. Absolutely shameful. And we thought the 109th Congress was the "do-nothing" champion. It should come as no surprise that Secretary Rice's top priority is the having the Iraqis finish up the oil laws.

It's a George Bush democracy.

"Bush has spent more than a year of his presidency" at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. On August 19, 2005, "he broke Ronald Reagan's record of 335 days for America's most vacationed president and went on to take the longest presidential vacation in 36 years," http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=George_W._Bush:_The_War_President_is_Missing_in_Action

with the way technology is today, i am curious as to what can't bush do on his ranch that he could do in washington ?

AR, I was kind of joking with you, and although my point was a little backwards, I stand behind the idea that I don't think it's appropriate, image-wise, that the Commander in Chief of the soldiers takes so much time away from Washington. Apparently, it's fine for some to be not on vacation, but when it comes to him, he can't be held to a standard even remotely like every other President before him? Especially when he is talking about sacrifice and support as his main rip on liberals and democrats?

I think it's important to keep a certain amount of propriety and image to the office of the President. To be spending so much time away from where state business and foreign policy should be taking place (the White House), seems like bad form to me. He is so worried about the message our country and democrats send to the enemy? How about him being on vacation so much? What kind of message does that send? It's an image thing, and availability thing, IMO. I know he can be in contact with people...that's not the point.

chad.....

that's a good point...didn't think of that.

a question for you...

what kind of message or image is sent when americans in public life call the president of the u.s a liar or crook or stupid or other demeaning names ?

does that bother you & or do you just shrug it off & say that a person has a right to say those things ?

it bothers me because it shows a lack of repect for our country, our electoral process, & the office of presidency....

Two month vacation? Wow, we are really going to miss them. The country might fall apart.

Eddie

Eddie you seem to think the same as me when it comes to this corrupt administration. me i hope he takes as many days as he wishes. God Bless him and if he needs a place to stay and promises to do no work i will gladly house him. Had this argument about the congress with Kosar once. He thought it was wrong that they took so many days off. Me i wish they would take them all off. The least they work the better it is for the country. Especially that worthless anti american worker congress we just had the last six years.

AR, in one respect I agree with you, although I generally feel that way when terms like that are used in frustration in almost any case...I guess it's the old communications major in me. Namecalling usually signifies a lack of something of value to say, and usually reflects back on the person doing it. There are times when it fits the bill, though, I know that.

I do think in some ways it's important to maintain some respect and decorum when dealing with the office, and I personally try to refrain from general namecalling of the President. I can, however, surely understand the reasoning behind many feeling the way they do when they say it, I just wish they could explain it more effectively. I honestly think that probably every President we have ever had has been put in the position of having to lie for one reason or another. So, I guess to call him a liar is probably at least on point, and I think naive to think that he hasn't lied. Publicly? Probably a better way to say it for the good of the country, I guess. As for him being stupid, I don't think that, but I don't think him overly smart either, and I think he is a miserable communicator which makes him look stupid at times. Which I think hurts our country more in many ways than what our people say about him publicly. I think to say he's a crook is probably the farthest off point, because I don't know how that can honestly be proven beyond a reasonable doubt yet. A lot of gray areas in that one, and I think many things about that. I think it's probably the most damaging to say publicly, too. I think it is quite easy to connect dots that he and the people who support him have benefitted financially and professionally more than any group in that office previously, but as for being a crook? Could probably be proven more easily without all the efforts made to hide things and surround the group in a protective shroud of secrecy unmatched in our country's history.

I think we'll learn more in the coming years about all of this tangled web. But to directly address your questions, I think it does hurt the country some, but I definitely think his group has brought on a lot of it themselves.

chad...

good post...

bush is the worst communicator of my lifetime. i think he should have given monthly staus reports on the war from the beginning.

i also think people make mistakes when they equate bad public speaking to lacking intelligence.

AR - I am very guilty of your last comment. I base much of my assumptions about a person based on how they communicate. I'm living proof that a reasonably schooled communicator many times doesn't know crap about shite...

Chadman, don't fall for AR's traps. He is very quick to appear civilized and offended when someone calls Bush or Cheney a bad name. But he is magically nowhere to be found when people pile-on Reid or Pelosi or other Dem leaders.
