My account balance was at $240 before the WC so I looked for odds on a team that jumped out at me. Korea was 125-1 so I decided to put $40 on them.

Is it possible? Boy could I use 5 dimes :D.

Myron:

That would be a nice payday indeed!

Hopefully (for you), the Koreans can pull off two more upsets and get the to the finals (not totally out of the question). Then, you can freeroll a hedge play on the other side and be guaranteed $2500. Then again, might you go the whole distance is you are holding a live ticket and the Koreans are one game away from winning it all?

It depends who they play. If they make it to the finals vs. Brazil or England there would be no value in hedging. Versus Senagal or Turkey I'd get a nice hedge (In fact Korea could even be favorites vs. them).

I've always been wary of the "hedge bet" because if you hedge often then in in the long run all you are doing is making random bets into juiced lines and you will certainly show a loss from them overrall.

Having said that however, I believe that there are situations where it is in the bettors advantage to bet into juiced lines and guarantee the profit. This happens when the potential payoff is so large compared to the money in your pocket that the extra amount you are winning by "going for the jackpot" isn't worth as much as the money you can guarantee yourself. I call this the principle of "All Dollars Are Not Created Equal" - any extra units you are winning at the highest end of your bankroll are worth so much less than your the units at the lower end. It all depends on the size of your bankroll.

I probably didn't explain myself very well here ... I'll try to start a thread in the General Gambling forum with some examples to show my point better.

The Italians have a complaint but boy are they sore losers. I heard the Italian team that employs the Korean who scored the winning goal is dismissing him for conduct that was detrimental to the good of Italy (i.e. daring to score the winning goal).

it's not exactly like that...the president of that team says: we picked him from korea when nobody knew him, we taught him a lot, then we are treated like that? (by the referee who is subject to the VERY STRONG Korean federation) then it is better to let a young italian play. Obviously, Italy could score the second goal and the referee couldn't do anything, but why do we have to win big in order to win? 4 regular goals (4!!!!!!!) taken away in 3 (3!!!!) games, don't you think it's too much for anyone?

Lokk at what happened to Brazil, at least 3 crucial calls on their side (invented penalty against Turkey, ONLY a fine to Rivaldo who was a real actor, and a goal taken away to Belgium)

In '94 we were all disgusted by Maradona testing positive and when he accused FIFA, we all laughed at him, i am clueless but maybe we should apologize...

This is funnier than I imagined:

http://www.wc-soccer.com/index.php?page=details&area=1024493101

"I am not extending his contract, he does not merit it," Gaucci said. "When he arrived, he was like a little lost goat who didn't even have the money to buy a sandwich. He became rich without doing anything exceptional and then, at the World Cup, he denigrated Italian football.

"I would have to pay three billion lire (1.53 million dollars) to extend his contract. But I won't.

"Ahn will never play for Perugia again. What do you think I would do? That I would keep a player who ruined Italian football. He should have shown his talent while he was with us. He'll just have to go back to Korea and earn 100,000 lire (about 48 dollars) a month."

That is one of the funniest sports stories I have ever read!! Imagine if Mario Lemieux scores the wining goal for Canada against the States in the Olympics and Pittsburgh then gets rid of him!

High comedy.
