FYI-
Winner of 1st at Saratoga - favorite Mixed Up ridden by Danielle Hudsdon a 29yo lady rider, carrying high weight of 158 lbs which unless she was shaped like Roseanne Barr. most of the dead weight is in the saddle. Steeple or Hurdle racing was extremely popular in the 19th century and it was not uncommon for 4 to 6mi heats run over an entire day. Hence the term, Dead Heat.
Besides Saratoga and Colonial Downs, haven't seen any.

Above the Clouds....
Dan, They used to run Steeplechase races everyday here years ago. They were 4th and 6th races if I remember correctly. In addition they had several features that were steeple races. They died of in popularity and Sar only has a handful every year. Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia still have them but I don't know to what extent.

Perfect racing day today.. about 80 and no humidity!!

NYC and the then 3 Jersey tracks used to have them as well. I seem to recall that 145 was top weight then. This one guy was like 6'4" and 148 and he always complained about making his weight. He looked like a celery stalk. I really don't miss it though. Lots of falls. Easy to cap though. Hardly ever had to worry about closers. After 2 miles, they just wanted to get back to the barn, kick back and watch old westerns on TV.

I remember years ago I had a 26-1 shot going (probably had 10 bucks on it back then) and he made a monster move at the top of the stretch. he got to the last hurdle in front and fell down before he ever jumped. Funny now not back then.
