Detroit showed no ability late in the game to stop Chicago, so maybe it was dumb, but he misses that FG in OT into the wind, and Morningwanker looks like a genius.

Jauron:
"We had talked about it for a long time. I don't think there is a wrong decision there," Chicago coach Dick Jauron said about Detroit kicking off in overtime. "I think it was really hard to turn the ball down in an overtime situation, but I think he made the right decision. I can tell you we talked about it long and hard on our sideline."

As a Lions fan, it is unbelievable to me the # of questionable decisions Morningweg made Sunday afternoon. Your defence has been on the field the majority of the final 8 minutes of the 4th quarter, are completely gassed, and you put em right back on the field? Secondly, the Bears get it to the Lions 35 and it is 4th and 8 and they accept the penalty to push em back? The whole reason you deferred after winning the coin toss was so that they would be kicking into the wind and you downwind. If the wind was so strong...a 52 yarder into that stiff wind had no chance right?

Those are only two decisions, but the circus continues in Detroit with the Lions.

That's a tricky call though. You have to weigh the chance of him making a 52 yarder against the chance of stopping them and him hitting the 62 yarder against the chance of them gaining 15 yards and him hitting the 47 yarder. That's a lot of variables to be holding together in your head, and you have to make a pretty quick call.

If Chicago doesn't get that 15 yard completion, and the 62 yard attempt falls 1 yard short, he looks like a genius.

On accepting the penalty:
"I would do that again. Well, knowing the outcome of this game, I wouldn't," Mornhinweg said. "But if it were a similar situation I would do that again. I had a lot of confidence in our defense up to that point. That guy is a heckuva field goal kicker. I wanted them to have little or no opportunity to kick a field goal, so I backed them up."

When things are going bad, you cannot make a correct decision. If he declines the penalty, they make the 52-yarder or they go for it and make the first down. If he takes the ball after the coin flip, they fumble or miss a FG on account of the wind.

In my opinion, you have to give the guy some credit for not being afraid to make the decision that he thinks is best even though he had to know that he would be criticized for it if he lost.

Terrible decision!

Terrible decision!

The Bears had scored the last 2 times and only stopped themselves all day. Defense was toast. The Lions only had 16 players that could play on defense all day. This guy has replaced Rich Kotite has the worst NFL coach of all time. The Lions should have received the ball. They had been returning kicks well all day!
Look for a huge letdown on thanksgiving day. New England is going to light up the scoreboard.
