The Israeli army has resumed its operations in the Gaza Strip as it continues its campaign to secure the release of a soldier taken captive three weeks ago.
Although air-strikes have continued in the area since the Jewish state began military attacks upon Hizbullah militants in Lebanon, this is the first time that its ground troops have been in Gaza for a week.
Troops, supported by tanks and helicopter gunships reached the border town of Beit Hanoun, which the army views as a staging point for militants to fire missiles into Israeli territory.
As well campaigning for the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit, who was captured by militants in a cross-border raid last month, Israel is also attempting to deny Palestinian militants the firing ground from which to launch rockets at its nearby settlements.
Israeli forces are at the same time engaged in southern Lebanon as part of sporadic gun battles with militants on the border, although the army has stopped short of entering Lebanese territory.
Three Palestinians were reportedly killed and more than ten injured in the Israeli army's latest strike in Gaza today, while according to local media sources, a women was killed in the south of the region when her home was hit by a shell.
About 80 Palestinians have been killed since Cpl Shalit was taken hostage, the majority of which Hamas, the ruling party in the Palestinian government, claims to have been civilians.
