I've tried everything with not much return

-buying different types of seed $$$ from top shelf brands, shade seed, cheap seed, make your ears bigger seed

-purchased better top soil $$$ repeatedly and applied it

-used starter $$$ fertilizer

-tilled the soil 1st

-eliminated any possiblity of grubs $$$

-busted my ass working on any trees large and small with an extending trimmer/saw I bought $$$

-use the Scott $$$ program year round (4/5 times through) of fertilization

-I water the lawn constantly $$$, especially during drier and hotter periods.

-daily pick up any debris from condems to tree twigs

-talk to the grass about what proper bets to make (to no avail)

-chased BTJ's squirrels and neighborhood cats off

-try not to walk on it

-if drunk, taken proper dumps on it only in areas that need special nutrients

-cut it higher during the hotter months

Is your yard on top of an old Indian graveyard? When they moved the headstones, did they leave the bodies? It sounds like your land is cursed. It happens. You gotta get like a Shamen or something to free the trapped spirits, then the soil will again be able to yield crops.

I reseeded the entire lawn here last year and it was a big success, except for a couple small spots. Used Kentucky Blue grass and 5 cubic yards of triple mix...really good rich dark soil. That amount of soil covered the ~3000 sq. feet of yard I have.

To me the key was spreading the triple mix pretty thick (an inch+), then sprinkling VERY liberally lots of seed, then covering the seed again with a thin layer of dirt (maybe a quarter inch this time). The last part is important so that the seed doesn't blow away or get eaten by birds.

And of course, lots of water. Prior to last year I basically had dirt, not a lawn. Now I'd say it's 95% thick lawn. Oh, and weeds this year as an added bonus.

i'm glad i don't have grass...hated taking care of it when i lived in ny....

have desert landscape now...much easier to handle....but still have weeds...

IO....get a soil sample...have it analized..

a compost/topsoil mix will usually grow any tall fescue..

i do it for a livin'
