South Alabama visits Florida State tonight
Thursday, December 16, 2004

Coming off its best performance of the young basketball season, South Alabama will try to post its first road victory and even its record tonight when it plays Florida State at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Jaguars (3-4) have dropped their road appearances at Old Dominion, Alabama State and Mississippi State. They face an FSU team that is also struggling. The Seminoles (4-4) dropped a 65-60 decision at home to Florida International in their last game.

Tipoff is at 6 p.m. The game is being televised by the Sunshine Network.

The South Alabama-Florida State matchup looks like it will be a low-scoring game. USA and FSU have both been playing solid defense. The Jaguars are giving up 61 points a game and allowing opponents to shoot just 39.8 percent from the floor. The Seminoles yield 66 points per game and limit opponents to 40.4 percent shooting.

"Florida State will be a good opponent for us," said South Alabama coach John Pelphrey. "They have a very young team, but receive contributions from nearly everyone on their roster. They should be extremely focused."

The Seminoles routinely use 11 or 12 players a game and their statistics reflect it. Guard Von Wafer is the leading scorer with 10 points per game, but he averages just 25 minutes of playing time. He didn't play in the loss to Florida International.

Florida State has four players -- forward Diego Romero, forward Alex Johnson, forward Al Thornton and guard Todd Galloway -- all averaging 7 points a game. Thornton comes off the bench and four more reserves are scoring 6 points a game.

South Alabama's scoring has not been as consistent. Junior guard Mario Jointer has been USA's top scorer in five games. He's averaging 17.6 points per game. Junior guard Jeffrey Collins follows at 9.1 points, junior forward Richard Law 7.6 points and sophomore guard Stephen Cowherd 7.6 points.

The Jaguars' scoring was more balanced in the latest win, a 77-62 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Sunday. USA had four players reach double figures led by Cowherd's season-high 21 points. The team also had a season-high 15 3-pointers and a season-low 11 turnovers.
