Jeff Byrd 500
By Yahoo! Sports Staff

March 17, 2011

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway for Sunday's Jeff Byrd 500. The event is the first of two Cup races there this season.
Jimmie Johnson is the defending race winner.

Who Will Win?

1300307711.jpg
Stewart Tony Stewart: Think he's still a little ticked off after his pit crew handed away the win at Las Vegas? I'm guessing he is. Smoke is off to his best start in years, and what's most promising is that he's leading laps, unlike two years ago when he sat atop the points standings despite leading very few laps. Anger coupled with how solid he's running will propel him to victory lane. ? Jay Hart
Kurt Busch: He has five wins at Bristol, but none since 2006 and is eager to get back to victory lane, especially after losing last season because of a late debris caution. He led 278 laps and wasn't very thrilled to finish third behind Jimmie Johnson and Stewart. He's opened the season strong, with top 10s in all three races, and has to like his chances at Bristol. ? Jenna Fryer
? Little bro Kyle gets the press at Bristol, and deservedly so given his trifecta last year, but Kurt upholds his end of the family name quite well. He's run 20 races at Bristol, and in that time he's scored five wins. True, he hasn't had one since 2006, but Kurt has a history of strong early-season starts. Expect him to keep the 22 up front all afternoon. ? Jay Busbee
Three things to watch for:

1300307960.jpg
Gibbs 1. Will the Joe Gibbs Racing engines last? At least one of the JGR trio of drivers has had engine issues every week of the season so far. How big a problem do they have on their hands? If they have another issue this weekend, we'll know it's huge.

2. How quickly will drivers lose their patience? There's been plenty of aggressive driving early on in races this season, resulting in several wrecks that have taken out more than 10 cars in each. Drivers are already on their toes at Bristol. Losing patience early could result in a massive pileup that could wipe a huge chunk of the field.

3. Who will lose the race on pit road? We've already seen a slew of pit-road mishaps, most notably the crews of Stewart and Greg Biffle messing up at Las Vegas. Bristol is a tough place to pass, and laps click off so quickly that even a minor slip can be a major setback.

Top storyline

1300308036.jpg
Kyle Busch? Kyle vs. Carl. :mj15: :hitwithro The two best drivers in NASCAR at this moment have a history of violence at Bristol, most notably in the 2008 night race. Edwards passed Kyle late to take the checkered flag, Bush retaliated after the win, and Edwards proceeded to spin Kyle during the cool-down lap, much to the delight of the 160,000 in attendance. Three years later, and we're just weeks away from Busch getting into Edwards at Phoenix. Any residual rage there? Perhaps not, but if these two get up front, it'll be the best side-by-side racing of the year. ? Jay Busbee

? There's been a lot of discussion about last week's poorly timed off-weekend, which has the potential to crush the momentum NASCAR built through the first three weeks of the season. A good race Sunday ? and a good crowd ? could go a long way toward carrying the progress forward. But a mediocre race, particularly as NASCAR goes head-to-head with the NCAA tournament, could really set NASCAR back much worse than an off-weekend did. ? Jenna Fryer

? Will Jeff Burton, Joey Logano and Biffle climb back into the hunt or dig themselves deeper into a hole? All three sit worse than 30th in the standings, meaning each is in desperate need of a quality finish. Who will get it and who will be left to chase the "wild card"? ? Jay Hart
From The Source

Clint Bowyer, on wrecking early on at Bristol last year: "Funny story ? I was driving and on my way home I about ripped the leather off the steering wheel because I was so mad. I pulled in to get gas down the road and the cashier had a little TV behind the counter watching the race. I told him how much money I put in and he looked at me, looked at the TV, looked at me again and said, 'Why are you here?' I said, 'Long story; don't ask.' It was actually pretty funny."
