March 1, 2002
NEW YORK (AP) -- Joe Thornton of the Boston Bruins was suspended for three games without pay by the National Hockey League on Friday for a cross-check against Rod Brind'Amour of the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.
On the play in the third period, Thornton was assessed a game misconduct and match penalty for an attempt to injure.
Thornton was suspended for two games in February of last year and now is considered a repeat offender under terms of the collective bargaining agreement. As a result, the current suspension will cost him $67,073.16 in salary based on the 82-game season rather than the 194-day season.
He will miss the Bruins' next three games, at Buffalo on Friday. March 4 against Philadelphia and March 6 at Montreal. He will be eligible to return to the team on March 8 at Atlanta.
