Insult or not, I can't feel sorry for anyone involved. Steinbrenner is a complete ass and always has been. And to even consider firing a guy who makes the playoffs 12 straight years, wins 6 pennants and 4 world series is pure garbage.

At the same time, it must be tough to be offered $5 million for one year to manage Jeter, A-Rod, etc. Cry me a river.

Give me a million and I'll make the playoffs. I'll probably win the series.

i don't think it was the base salary so much. (5mill) I think the fact he went to the playoffs so many years in a row, and he was offered money for every round of the playoffs he achieved.

I think joe torre felt like the owner(s) thought he needed an incentive to win and that insulted him. (like he was TRYING to lose the first series every year.)

Being from the Tri State area and a Torre fan, i find it funny fans view joe was the genius who lead to all those world championships, but this season it was all the players faults.(joe wasn't the one hititng or pitching)

I agree on your post. My problem with Torre is which other team will offer the same salary and incentives? Go to TB and see what a genius you are...the Braves in the 80's would be a good example.

I would imagine that being the manager in that pressure cooker environment would eventually wear down anyone. He's got loads of cash, four rings and will be immediately given offers to do TV work. I would get the hell out, as well.

retire man play golf ever day and laugh at the yanks squad next year. The yanks are going to pay an old catcher 15 mill a year, and probably have to give arod a nice raise so he doesn't exercise his opt out. They can not buy any free agents bc there are none.

He should of been giving a raise. Didn't the boss say he job is on the line if he doesn't make the playoffs. Well he did define all odds and make the playoffs despite playing so poorly the first half of the season. They were only bridging the way for the next manager mattingly to open the new stadium anyway.

You guys act like coaching a team full of prima donnas and guys with enormous egos is an easy task. Give torre some credit. He was able to keep some high maintenance people on task when a lot of other guys might not have been able to right the ship. I'm not sure it was the amount of the contract versus the time frame. It was a slap in the face, and at the end of the day the man has to look in the mirror and be able to respect himself for the decisions he makes.

I definitely give Torre a lot of credit for that consistency and 4 titles off of 6 pennants. Like I say, how can you even think of firing him.

At the same time I can't sympathize at all with someone who turns down 5 mil a year. And how much fukin' money does A-Rod need? Jeez.

what a shame. I think he was making about 4 million more than the next highest paid manager. 5mil next year, win the world series and it goes to 8 which would be a raise. what a slap in the face. lose in the first round of the playoffs, priceless. the only bad part is I'll have to watch it take up half of sportscenter for the next month. oh, and don't forget 2 hours of coverage of him saying no beginning at 1pm, his live press conference at 2. think I'll miss it...

how to stick it to the yanks

how to stick it to the yanks

if the mets fire willy Randolph ( a yankees guy) and hire Joe Torre. That would make the NY Post and the Daily news In New york city the most interesting newspapers in the world. for the sake of water coolers i hope that happens.
