Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - John Daly issued a statement Friday in which he says he was assaulted by his wife while he slept.
Daly played the second round of the St. Jude Classic in Memphis with scratch marks on his cheeks. News outlets reported Daly told authorities his wife tried to stab him with a steak knife.:mj07:
"While I slept at home last night, I was the victim of an assault by my wife," Daly's statement begins.
The 41-year-old golfer, who lives in nearby Cordova, Tennessee, filed a complaint with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the incident. Daly said he would have no further comment on the situation.
"My only concern at this point is for the safety of my children and myself, and we are working closely with local authorities and PGA Tour security officials to assure appropriate safeguards," the statement read.
Daly married his fourth wife, Sherrie, in 2001. They both filed for divorce last October, but it never came to pass.
Struggling as of late, the two-time major champion is playing this week on a sponsor's exemption.
